Hey guys I recently took my 14b off of my 1g and I'm pretty sure that its the original turbo from 1990. So its about 22 years old. I just took it apart today and was wondering if it looks like it would be a decent candidate. I plan on upgrading soon but living in California its always good to have a stock turbo just in case the smog nazis require me to put a stock looking turbo on. So here are some pics of my turbo. The hotside has multiple cracks and will need to be replaced. The wheels have no nicks or bends. There was very minimal shaft play (side to side) and no oil burning. I actually passed smog with this turbo and it seemed to boost great.

Turbine sealing ring's been leaking a while- common on old 14B's. The ring loses it's spring tension from so many hot/cold cycles.

Other than that cracked turbine housing, perfectly rebuildable...and honestly, I've seen housings that were cracked far worse than yours which were still in use so if you're upgrading eventually, it can remain.

Yours is one of the 01010 14B's with the 11mm right-hand threaded nut. This turbo was component-balanced from the factory as noted by the lack of balance grinds on this type of locknut.

Sweet thanks for the help! Where would be a good place to find a good 14b rebuild kit?

Hey Justin take a ree-look at that comp wheel..

On the edge behind the exducer(I hope I got that right) there looks to be some chips on the backing there..If You look at the top of first picture. Those half moons,Are those chips missing?

On the first pic I see only 3..There on the very top.

They're supposed to be there for what I am assuming is balance.

What do you guys think of this??? Is this too good to be true? Might as well upgrade to a bigger turbo during the rebuild?

You'll need to machine the center housing, and the TraderGreg kit linked above won't hold up well to the thrust loads of a 20G....you'd need a parts kit with an upgraded thrust system like those sold by Kamak/Kinugawa.

It would also be a horrible idea to use a 20G compressor with a 6cm turbine housing, so plan on upgrading that while you're at it. Before you know it you would've been better-off buying a 20G outright and selling your freshly-rebuilt 14B.
