what exactly is done when you have a motor rebuilt? and generally how long does a motor that was rebuilt last vs. a brand new motor?

A well built rebuilt motor will last just as long as a brand new motor.

On a rebuilt motor you have everything replaced with new parts and the block machined. Thus lasting just as long as a new one.

If you were looking for a detailed list then to start you off:

Machine the block
Machine the head, new valves, new valve seals, all that stuff
New main and rod bearings
New oil pump
New water pump
New piston rings
New gaskets for everything
New timing components
Obviously new plugs, wires, oil, and oil filter

There is no real answer to how long it will last, depends on so many factors, how you drive it, maintenance, and what was replaced.

Having the engine rebuilt should cost less than having a new motor put in, and it will last just as long as a brand motor. Always make sure to keep up the regular maintenance and you will extend the longevity of your motor.

A properly rebuilt motor is the same as a new motor or better depending on how meticulous your machinist will be with clearances. You also have the choice to utilize stronger parts as well to maximize a lot of factors revolving around the motor.

The length of time it will last will depend on factors just the same as a new motor. Those would include but not be limited to maintenance routine, oil choice, break-in procedure, how you drive, proper machine work, proper clearances, and proper assembly.

If you are considering rebuilding your motor, I would suggest to have it bored out to just under the next size up and have your pistons measured so the honing process will put them spot on for PTW clearance. Also, I'm personally using OEM bearings due to the multiple sizes available so you can make sure that every contact on the crank is at the same spec unlike with aftermarket bearings.

dont forget, a good machinist will def machine the crank and LINE HONE the mains. very important with new bearings and all. i personally kept my balance shaft during my build, but new bearings everywhere. a good machinist can take from a month to 2 months depending on how much you want done. i paid 1700 for a COMPLETE rebuild. bottom to top. only thing stock is the cams and springs, which dont typically need to be replaced(from what my machinist told me) hes very experienced.
i got manley pistons, rods, bored .020, and everything else u can think of brand new.
i believe that a properly built engine will last even longer than a brand new one ### ## using stronger aftermarket parts, and, with a good machinist, possibly even tighter tolerances everywhere. break in is important. i plan on a 3k mile break in on mine. was told to use a very modest amount of boost to help set everything.

I just rebuilt my motor (226K) and my mechanic stated "this motor should run strong until 500K on it". Yesterday I cracked the 230K mark. Problem is the motor is going to outlast the rest of the car, i.e new top, paint, and all the other goodies. If you are going to rebuild, plan on it talking a while unless you dont work or have no wife or kids, then it can go fairly quick. The quickest way is to buy rebuilt long block from someone experienced and install. Good luck.

Holy Hell! You should be boosting to break it in. Generally the rings are seated in 100 miles or so.

Search for the motoman method of breaking in an engine, it's vastly superior.

Ever heard of dyno or track break ins?

thanks liquidx, i will search that. i thought 3k was excessive but i just want to be on the safe side. maybe more like 1000 miles.
