rebuild now or later?

i have a 2G GSX. but i have a 6bolt motor (not installed yet)
i am new to the DSM world and i dont know what condition this 6 bolt is in as far as compession, gaskets, miles on the motor itself etc...

1st question- to buy dealer parts like tensioners, water pumps and so forth.. do i need to know the vin # or the year and make of the 6 bolt engine? how would i ask for these things from the parts guy at a dealership.

2nd question- do you think i should put the motor in the car as is (after checking timing and what nots) and get the car to run first, then pull it out and fix the issues.
OR pull the motor apart now and replace head gaskets, seals and other misc gaskets? the only fear i have of this is that this is my first time messing with a DSM motor. i do have Chilton and Haynes manuels with me though.

i am in no rush with this car at all. this is just a project. suggestions are much welcome for me right now.. everyday i look at this car and sometimes feel overwhelmed and dont know where to start.

For the whole timing side minus the water pump you want to use OEM parts. Any supporting vendor (just about any) will carry these items. If you are going to be fixing it up, you might as well do it now while it's already out of the car and not have to do things twice.

When ordering oem parts from the local dealer I just tell them the year of the car, after all I have a Talon so my vin is useless to them. Their computer defaults to a manual trans car, so if you have a auto there are slight differences.

In most cases I have found the dealers to be very helpful. The same can be said for the aftermarket venders I have worked with.

The bottom line is, I would build the 6 bolt the way you want so you know what you have when you first turn the key. If your not in a big rush to get it running take your time & do it right.

Dealers are also more expensive than the supporting vendors.

Unless you have a part number on hand I personally have needed to give a VIN number.

I would freshen up that motor with OEM components from one (or more) of our fine supporting vendors. I ordered a lot of my stuff through extremepsi.com

I say do a leakdown test on the engine. If that comes up good, then why mess with it? Maybe pull the pan and look for metal shavings, pull the valve cover to see if it's all discolored in the head, pull off the exhaust manifold to see if any of the ports are caked with oil. If those are good, I'd just put the engine in. Why spend time and money on a rebuild that's not needed? As far as ordering parts for a 6 bolt engine, say you have a 91 and get a 91 VIN if possible. When ordering parts for the rest of the car, just say what year the shell is. But I'd order from vendors on here and just tell them what you have and they'll take care of you.

The bare minimum I would do is at least pull the pan and inspect the rods and what not. Wiggle them around a bit...

hmm.. good tips.. will do.. leak test was on the agenda before the drop in..

thanks for the info for the vendors. i will definitly look them up for rebuild kits and other various R&R parts that will be needed.

after i get the car running, i do plan to take the engine back out and paint the engine bay black. i just wanna make sure i got a good working engine first
