Just got done with my 6bolt swap and the worst happened.

I was driving and my oil pressure dropped so I went and parked it.
Thought it was my head gasket so fixed that and went to start my car and all I heard was KNOCK KNOCK and so on.

What happened was my oil pump stub shaft (used w/ balance shaft elim kit) backed of into my motor. Luckly it just sat at the bottom of the oil pan but I ended up spin the rod bearing and had metal go every where inside.

So it looks like its time for a new bottom end.

why not just grind the crank and throw in some oversized bearings? Did you put lockite on the bolt that goes into the stubby shaft and torque to 27lbs?

Mitsu cranks can not be machined, they must be replace if they are out of spec.

Sure they can. Don't go too crazy with it, and if you're smart have it cryo-ed or nitrided. It's not a "good idea" to turn them, but don't tell people it "can not" be done. :thumb:

...but ask your self why when you can pick up stock cranks for $30-125 and not even have to worry about it. Personally I would never touch a cut crank :notgood: . I got super mad that my comp froze up on me a bit back, I watched a micro polished (stock 6bolt crank) go for $35 on ebay.

Sorry to hear about your loss, I make sure to use loc-tite just to play it safe there.

Well that would actually be very true valid point, however in regards to his post about a 6 bolt motor going bad its better to replace it IMO. That and redo that stub shaft

Ive actually got two here (7bolt cranks) that I know did not walk that im keeping around JUST to be safe for the future. However my 2G is getting a 6 bolt motor as we speak because it crankwalked, spun more then one rod bearing and trashed the timing belt thus causing the valves to get friendly with the pistons... so yea its trashed

hey when i did my rebuild i had a groove in my crank i had it polished to remove the groove and when they where done it still was standard bearings and all. i also had the oil ports bored ever so slightly its practicly unoticeable. and race balanced it. it works great!
15,000 aggressive miles later all is well.

but it costs just as much to do that as if you wanted to buy a new crank so if u want get a new one.

i wanted mine race balanced either way so i didnt want to buy a new one. it would have been more money.

Are you saying you have TOO many 7bolt cranks and would like to give one to a deserving fellow DSMer, who happens to have posted in this thread...? :sneaky: :D
