my motor in my car is trash... and i have been searching for a long time and dont know weather to rebuild the 6bolt (and with what?)or to go with the a jdm imported engine from japan? how hard is it to convert it to U.S. emission specs?
If i rebuild should i stick with the 1g rods? what about the pistons? do 2g pistons work better than 1g? i heard the 3g lifters work great??? me and my dad can do all the engine work so we dont need to send it to a shop, but were thinking it would be way easier to go with the japan imported engine... is 1400-1500 a good deal for it?
So many questions, sorry guys they've probably all been answered before but i'm sick of looking and not finding answers...

were taking out the engine this weekend so any help is appreciated, i wanna get it runnin asap

also my tranny is shot i need a new one or rebuilt it grinds and dont like goin into 3rd... suggestions?
thanks guys :thumb:

Well i personally wouldn't buy a used engine your just buying an asian guys problem.

Rebuild it.....I am in the process of rebuilding mine and it is running me around 2k but thats with

Eagle Rods and Weisco pistons were 790Shipped
Clevite rod and main bearings 69$ from Napa
ARP head studs 100$ from SBR
Engine Gasket Set 130$ Rock Engine gasket set. (dont use topline)(Mitsu-246.07)
Rock oil Pump 165$ (don't use toplines)(Mitsu-300.00, gears and front case)

Machine Work:

Bore 75$ all four cylinders
Deck the block 65$
Polish the crank 50$
Hot tank my items 40$
Resurface head 60$
Engine Assembled by the machine shop 250$
Balanced rotating assembly 250$ (roughly)

So for a little more money I ended up with a mildly built motor with no miles compared to a used motor with unknown miles and stock rods and pistons. Not to mention while I had the time I gasket matched intake and exhaust sides of the head and polished the intake side. Gasket matched my intake manifold to boot.

If you stock with stock rods and pistons you could cut your costs in half almost. I also opted for the machine shop to assemble because I didn't want to risk my build at the cost of 250$. Not to mention I've never rebuilt a motor and I don't wanna learn at a 2,000 dollar expense.

It really depends on how you messed up you other motor.

If you tore up the main caps, you would need to find another decent block and crank to start anyways.

If your not going for huge amounts of power a 2g pistons motor would be the best choice imo.

Keep in mind all the little things add up, so have your fund in order.

I've seen some horrid looking motors come from those JDM Importers who promise around 15k...I call BS on that. Besides, there really isn't a worthwhile difference between USDM and JDM besides the fact that people like to hear that its JDM.

What went wrong with your old motor? Depending on what happened, it can be rebuilt for well under 1500-2000. Even if your block is trash, a new 6-bolt can be found for $200 or less.

thanks for the info guys, i'm pretty sure its gonna be rebuilt not bought from some jdm importer.

the engine has 165XXX miles and it idles really really bad and will quit if i dont gas it (thats probably because it needs to be tuned? i bought it with the mods on it) the engine sprays oil all over under the hood and goes through a quart a week. My dad and i cant tell where the oil is coming from its strange i know... One time it did this the oil dipstick got shot out of its holder  . Now about a week ago it started smoking white smoke really bad out the back of the exhaust from under the hood and into the cars interior :( . So my dad said before i blow a rod through the block i hang up the keys and we rebuild it.

thanks guys
