toronto,
Right, so as the topic says I'm doing a complete rebuild of the engine. The only thing I wont be doing myself is the valve/p&p job, that I'm giving the head to a machine shop.
Since I have everything apart now, I'm willing to take pictures of the things I'll be doing and doing a write-up on how to do it properly. In case anyone is interested, just post what you'd like to see, and I'll do my best to do a good write-up w/ pictures.

Things that I will be doing:
Balance shaft removal (using Vfaqs mitsu part #s)
Rod bearings
Piston bearings
Changing all the gaskets and seals
Piston rings (all 3 obviously)
Honing the cylinders
I'll be doing some minor things as well, but those are the main things I'm after.

So if anyone is interested, I'll do a write-up on whatever you guys want to see.
Also, since I have everything apart already, there will be no process for taking the engine out/apart, but maybe I'll do the reverse job (re-assembling the engine and droppin it in the car).

Id actually like to see a good writeup on doing a Balance Shaft Elim, but using the tapping screws through the block method. Honestly, I think this way is safer in the long run.

are you going to be putting the pistons and crank in the block? will you be showing good detail pictures of everything you do to put a bare block together from the front oil case to setting the timing? also good luck and i look foward to your write up :thumb:

Well since i'm in the exact same boat as you...A write up would be awesome.

But i'm new to the turbo scene so I may be asking some noob questions on hw to build a six bolt properly.

I plan on doing pretty much the same thing. I want to run 1g big rods/2g pistons. and i will be sending my head out to a machine shop as well since i can't do that myself.

I've heard you have to be in a contaminent free room while assembling the block. i dunno if this is true but i was goign to put the pistons/rods/crank in myself but after i heard that shoudl i send that out to a machine shop as well?

anyway good luck with your rebuild. I'll post pics up as well if you want more for the writeup.

i second that. this is perefect as i plan to start my engine build up soon and i need to see how much i can do safely myself.

Yeah...thats my concern. I've read you'll need to send out the head...and i thougt you could assemble the block yourself but now i'm unsure.

I also am doing a complete engine overhaul. I believe if you have the time, doing the rebuild is not that hard. I am currenly looking at my engine in my Living Room, and rebuilding it right here. I am in college right now and don't have a garage to work on my car so my next best place is my house. If you are planning on doing a rebuild I would recamend labeling everything, put all your nuts and bolts in bages and mark so you are not to lose them. Also if available, take pictures, its not that bad when you can look what you had before you started disassembling everything. Last thing, is make sure everything is clean, and lay stuff out for you to see what you have.

Well, I'm gonna do some more reading up on the screw through the oiling whole block balance shaft elim procedure, but it might be safer to go with the method a lot of people have used. Yes I will be doing a complete teardown (oil pump assey and the oild pump cover w/ gaskets). I'm not sure if I'll be taking the crank out, but the pistons are out already, and the block is fully stripped w/ the exception of the crank. Since my crank is in good condition, I'm not sure I would be taking it out.

I was planning on going from the piston ring install to the timing write-up, but this will take a few weeks because of the funds required to take the head to a good machine shop. I'm glad to see people interested, keep posting of things you'd want to see, but please have patience :)

THnx for the replies.

ALso, I have mitchell's so I wont be getting confused w/ parts. I think i'll also be posting up some diagrams of the eingine's components and where they go

Ok so, pulled the crank out and completely stripped the blocked. Started taking pictures already of everything, before and after cleaning (pistons/rods) and etc. Starting to move along the path.

Also doing more research on the before mentioned balance shaft removal tactic, I think I might be heading that route.

Ok, pistons cleaned, new rings and all new bearings installed, evething back in the block. I did the balance removal following the requested method, pictures and a write-up should be coming in a day or two for the removal of the ballance shafts.
