Hey guys I have a question. The other day I was driving on the inner state and some how broke my rear diff cover and bearing cap in between rear and mid DS. Ok so I got a diff cover and DS bearing cap and installed them went to bolt up DS got two bolts in and could not turn tha wheels to get the other 2 bolts in so I lowered the car down and tried to push it to turn the dS so I could install the other 2 bolts and the back wheels just kinda slid on tha gravel so I put it up in the air air on 4 jackstands and started it and put it in 1st and when I let out on the clutch the back wheels and DS did not turn however the front did ### help
 
You have a transfer case issue, sadly. Drop it and inspect/repair/replace.
 
Ok that sucks. Can I drop my DS and transfer case and just leave my rear diff and axels in it and drive it as a GST until I can get one? Or will that cause more issues ?
 
I've never personally tried anything like that, but I would assume that it'd hurt nothing. The only other thing I'd be worried about being damaged is the output assembly from the transmission to the transfer case.

You must really, really hate your center differential.

Don't drive the car until you buy another transfer case- make sure it's for a 97-99 5-speed or you'll still be replacing the center diff at some point.

Based on Justins' response - absolutely not. ;)

As I said, I've never done it, wouldn't ever try it, so I've never looked into it. Just inspect to see what's damaged and go from there.
 
Lol, go for it. You won't get far. You would either need a welded center differential or a viscous coupler eliminator to drive the car in fwd without a driveshaft or transfer case. If you have a stock center diff and viscous coupler you will simply be freewheeling and will torch the viscous coupler. Go and get a transfer case or disassemble the transmission and get the viscous coupler swapped for a vce or weld the center diff if you want to run it in fwd.
 
Ok thanks guys I'll jus wait and not do that. It has the vicious lsd jfh in it I think it's the safety recall issue that got me. :( didn't know about it and should have checked it.
 
i had the same thing happen, my transfer case seized up, mine is a 1997 gsx, i found someone with a 95 transfer case, will it work or does it have to be from the same year?
 
What about rebuilding mine ? Is that an option or cheaper to get one?

Put it this way - A rebuild will be a couple hundred if you don't do it yourself.

I just sold Jus one in good working condition for .. what was it, $50?

Go find one in the classifieds.
 
I successfully rebuilt the first transfer case I ever disassembled from my buddy Jeff's car YEARS ago using about $80 worth of bearings and seals from my place of employment. His car wouldn't move at all- the bearing at the rear of the output shaft had locked up and luckily he was less than a block from home. Had it locked up while the car was moving I would have just scrapped everything but the input shaft cup and the cases knowing that something was surely weakened.

It's possible, but not easy to do. If you don't have big tools and a large bench vise, don't even think about it.
