rear main seal plate

Well I just got done rebuilding my motor and putting in a new clutch. The only regret i have is putting orange/red rtv on rear main seal (horse shoe like). Originally it didn't come with a gasket so i cleaned it and applied rtv gasket maker on it. I will be done with this project tomorrow.

My question is, has anyone put rtv on it and it sealed?

Only reply if u have done this before.

if you do the rtv route get some Mopar gear sealant from a Dodge dealer part #82300234. that stuff will seal a submarine at 10k underwater ha ha
i will never use red rtv or anything rtv from permatex or the like. also Yamabond works great (Yamaha brand rtv)

The motor and tranny is bolted up. if it leaks (hopefully not), i am willing to unbolt everything and get a gasket for it.

I used some grey RTV and mine was fine.

Also a guy that worked for mitsu a while back said they used RTV as well and didn't know they came with a paper gasket.

Aight sweet, I used the red stuff. you think it will seal as good as the grey stuff?

I couldnt tell ya, i've never used it. If its anywhere as thick and sticky as the grey then i dont see why not. As long as its ment to hold up to oil and high heat.

I going to be replacing mine soon and was going to order the rear main seal and gasket from extremepsi but it looks to thick. Is this the right seal I'm looking for?

The seal on extremepsi looks quite different so I was hesitant to put the order in.

yea, for your 6 bolt swap, thats the gasket. My rear main rtv seal held fine. no leaks.

So just to update, my rear main seal doesn't appear to be leaking anymore. I went with route with a paper gasket and copper spray. I had to clean up the old paper gasket since it was stuck to the block, but so far so good.

On the other hand, I removed the paper gasket from my oil pan and used "the right stuff" rtv, but I'm still getting a pretty bad leak
