I'm thinking about removing the rear balance shaft while I have the head and the front of the engine off. One thing I can't find any answer to is how the shaft is connected to the oil pump. I can't visualize how I can get the shaft out with it connected to the front cover. Just isn't going to be enough room.

From what I see of the stubby shaft, it looks like it just slides on the stubby shaft. Just want to make sure I'm right before I start tearing into it.

The rear balance shaft is connected by a bolt that is under a castle plugright on the back of the oil pump. You have to spin off that cap and unbolt it. Then stick your stubby shaft in the place of the balance shaft and bolt it up.

I lowered the engine enough so that the shaft would come out with it still attached to the cover. Had to lower it that much anyways to get the front one out. Its a real pain in the ass.
