Real benefits/drawbacks to replacing stock harmonic balancer with a lightweight one?

I recently replaced my harmonic balancer in my 1g with another stock one, but along the way i thought about going with a "performance" lightweight pulley... But i was discouraged by some who said that it would shake my engine to pieces...? Thoughts/opinions?
