So when will you bite the bullet and purchase a dogbox??

It will likely be when I grow a money tree in my front yard, or when I get sponsors -- most likely neither of these things will ever occur. I have already seen pigs fly and unicorns in my back yard. ROFL

Thankfully for me, I have a complete spare transmission ready to be put together with a LSD front diff and a center diff spool. Free, is alot less expensive than a dogbox.

There are very few people that can afford a dogbox. Let alone, replace one when it breaks. I, am not one of those people that can afford one, nor replacements when I break them also. They are NOT bullet-proof; they wear just like any normal transmission. Things break, that is part of racing and making nearly 900 torque at the crank doesn't help the longevity of anything; let alone drag racing in general.

Heck, it likely is the center differential pinion gear and the intermediate shaft that stripped themselves; that is not too bad. I at least have spare parts at home.

a dogbox cant cost more than 14 stock(ish) trannys. Plus you'll be able to shift with ease at a million rpm's (as long as your valve springs are up to the task).

They are NOT bullet-proof
Nothing is bullet proof when your approching the 1000hp mark.

speaking of Dogbox, a friend of mine here in St Point with the old DogBox racing's 1g talon just experience the odd:

I chuckled a little and said it would be fun to watch, and that I would put my car up against theirs for fun at the track. After I said that , I pointed to my car in the back of the shop, and they laughed -- I didn't == and then they looked around at the rest of the group of people surrounding them, realizing that I was calling out their smacktalk. They shut up then for the rest of the day.

Your a BADASS haha :thumb::dsm:

Those are some sweet numbers your putting down

Heh heh...that sucks ass. Frank should have put in a 7-bolt instead. ROFL I got an extra one bolt to hold me together! ROFL ROFL

How is that car coming along? I want to see that thing run!

Also, quick update:

Took out the transmission to rebuild it...stripped the splines off of the Quarter Master disks, twisted the input shaft splines severely, sheared all the teeth off of the ring gear on the center diff, intermediate shaft, 3rd gear on the input shaft, and the output shaft. Complete hand grenade! :thumb:

I have a new set of disks coming; 1-2 weeks from QM; now with hardened hubs on the clutch disks...why didn't they do that in the first place.... I will rebuild the transmission this week when I have time. The car will be up shortly. I will also post up some of the carnage pics of the transmission. It was a pretty cool breakage! :thumb:

As for the dogbox, heck, they didn't even come out until I was already at like 8 transmissions. As for purchasing one now...f-that, just have no more money to spend this year on stuff like that -- I am getting married in 3 weeks; alot of bills to pay for 2008.

What are you cooking in that kitchen, Tim?LOL

I am just putting another transmission together with a spool center diff, locked front diff, late model 1/2, 92 3/4, late model 5/R. New shafts, etc. Along with fresh Quarter Master forged hub disks and a fresh clutch fork. Nothing special...unfortunately I have a customer's car kicking my ass right now with an automatic trans install on a 2G 420A car, taking up WAY more time than I was expecting.

The clutch disks should be here next week, and I will have my trans ready to install by next weekend.

The car will be ready for Import Race Wars #2 on 5/25/08. I will also dyno it at 50psi once it is back together to hit 800+AWHP.

Kitchen is empty otherwise. I have been in contact with Drag Sport Magazine for an article, but I want to put down better dyno numbers, and back it up at the track before anything progresses.

Try not to break it this time. ;)

The transmission lasted 3 pulls on the dyno before the 3/4 hub/slider assembly grenaded, and the spooled center diff caused some problems also -- the front wheels were moving 2mph faster than the rear wheels on the dyno. The car was also a whore to drive with the spooled center diff.

Another transmission was built and installed. I didn't want to go back on the dyno anymore until it had some time to break in properly (not break properly ROFL).

I don't know when I will be at the track yet -- I have been really busy with work and life. :(

I love this thread your car is insane... I'm really looking forward to results and updates. And that is a lot of trannies I would have given up by now, props to you for being a trooper.

So you wont be at the 10am-4pm WIR event with the rest of the beyond redline crew firday? I hope i get a chance to see you run this year! Good luck with the car,....and life. :thumb:

I was intending on going, but I had some issues last night during my drive back from Columbus, OH in my other car. I ended up getting photo-copped in a work zone in Chicago which will likely cost me anywhere from $375-1000.

I just cannot afford to drive up there, pay to race, and hope that nothing breaks, then drive back home. All on Q16 gas that is $15.00 a gallon. Thats 250 miles plus track time. The trip would cost me around $300 in gas, along with racing fees, food, etc. = so lets say $375-500 plus breakage.

So, I am regretfully declining to go because I will not be able to afford the other responsibilities I currently am dealing with.

Thats a bummer, sorry to hear that.

As for gas coming up, couldn't you just run premium fuel and be ok? Just dont be doing any highway racing. Or even load a streetable tune into the AEM with much less timing and more fuel.

Yeah, I can run pump gas with no problem but I like having a continuously consistent tank of Q16 in the car so there is less variation of the quality of the fuel. It is just a hassle to purge the tank after driving up before the race.

There is more to it than just gas prices; I am working until 3am or so on Friday morning, then would need to get sleep, and then drive a hundred miles in my car each way to up North on the slicks.

I also have to reinstall a few parts still, and have very little time tomorrow to do so; I will see, but I am really not too keen on the whole idea anymore -- I really want to go, but I really need to keep my finances in check to deal with the other issues, and live to race another day. I will be attending the Import Wars #5 at Great Lakes Dragaway on August 16th (Saturday 3pm-10pm).

There are still a few tune issues I need to work on, along with some clutch hydraulics issues and thermostat issues. I just don't feel comfortable taking the chances until they are squared away.

I completely understand. Don't rush things, thats when stuff breaks or bad things happen. Maybe I'll drive down to GLD to watch ya, I have yet to see your car go down the 1320.

Trust me a dog box isn't the bullet proof cure all. We put a dog box in the laser and after about 3 passes and 2nd gear is gone, thanks to a broken rear. Call Shep and replace 2nd gear and slider and head back to the track the next weekend. This time we got 4 passes and no 3rd gear. But on the pass just before the 3rd gear breaking we did get a 9.91 pass without nitrous.

Hoping to get the tranny fixed in time for the shootout, but funds are going to be a little tight. When you you support this habit on your own dime it takes a little more time to get things back in order.

Agreed on that statement. I just can afford only so much as it is on my dime as well.

As for this year, I have already gone through 3 transmissions, clutch, cylinder head and valvetrain, L19 head studs, alternator, crank pulley, crank angle sensor, WB O2 sensor, clutch slave cylinder, intake manifold, cams, etc. And I haven't even been to the track yet! That was all on dyno time or street driving.

I think that "toubaby2" knows what I am talking about when it comes to a high HP car and its continuous maintenence -- it is EXPENSIVE!

Anyone can make a high HP car -- it is much more difficult to keep it running properly for a long period of time, and it is much more expensive to maintain. When transmission rebuilds are part of "regular maintenence", like doing oil changes are for stock cars, you get the idea.

I think I have driven the car around 500 miles this year, and have spent several thousand dollars. Think about it -- it costs around $10-20 per mile of driving accounting for parts replacement, fuel, fluids, etc. How regularly would you want to drive a car that costs you that much to maintain? More than likely, the answer is very rarely.

I am going to work on the car for a while this weekend and try to get some of the quirks fixed on it, and am looking forward to racing on August 16th hoping that the stars align and the weather cooperates.

I always say:
reliability and power cost money! welcome to the world of racing!

I am currently running your old EUGO. Just got a new sensor for it today. Why the change anyways?

I liked the PLX M300's display better. Also, at the time, the AEM wideband O2's were really expensive, and the PLX ones were much cheaper. Now as the world has it, they both have very cheap replacement sensors.

I have fixed the car, and will be driving up there in an hour.

As of now, the showcase cars there are:
*Dick Lambert's 2009 Nissan Skyline GT-R
*Dick Lambert's 1995 Mazda RX-7 Built with a GT35R setup
*Customer Ride: GMC Typhoon - different motor, supercharged, 3/4 Ton AWD BUILT setup
*Harvey Ebben's 1990 Eagle Talon FWD Turbo putting down 450WHP/460TQ on a Evo3 16G on a stock motor.
Some Beyond Redline cars are also present, and it is 80 degrees+ and sunny -- HOT!

I should be getting up there around 3pm or so, so I will actually be attending the Real Street Drags that will be going on from 4-11pm this evening, and hopefully a few races against Dick's Skyline will happen too!

See you all up there!

***Edit ***

The Skyline did 11.7 @ 118mph with 1.7 60's
The RX-7 did 11.9 @ 122
The Typhoon did 11.2-11.4's with 1.7 60's and suspension issues - 12psi and pump gas
Harvey's FWD talon was having a whole bunch of issues and was only doing 12's
Coty's FWD eclipse was doing mid 11's with 128mph traps on a FP88HTA setup.

There was also several starions and conquests there -- one of them is a 2JZ-powered T4 60-1 setup and was doing some extremely solid low 12's/high 11's?. A few evo's -- nothing too special, a few very well built Nissan S13 and S14 240's there (all of them were extremely clean single purpose drift cars, but were still putting down low 12's on a drift tire/suspension setup). The cars attending the RSD's ranged from 7.0's and slower -- alot of 9 to 11-second cars in attendence.

As for me, well unfortunately I had more problems. My turbo hand grenaded before I even got to the track -- the shaft snapped and totally destroyed the turbo, so it is now time to replace it with a new one. I am likely sticking with a GT4088R as it has solid potential with an excellent powerband and will make 800AWHP.

All in all, it was a fun day with some really sweet cars showing up for the RSD event! I am happy I went, and it was nice to see some old faces!
