So I finally had time to fix what I thought was an exhaust leak at the downpipe, but it turns out it's coming from the cat instead. I thought it was the heat shields around the cat rattling but it's coming from inside the heat shields. It rattles when my rpm's are low, ie idling, coming to a stop, turning on/shutting off the car. Does my cat most likely have a hole from rust? I can smell the exhaust too

Im willing to bet your cat is ruined. There is a bunch of honeycomb stuff inside that sometimes breaks apart and rattles around in there.
Solution--- Test pipe.

Well here's the thing... my cat is welded into my catback (bought it like that), so in order to put in a test pipe it'd have to be welded in or i'd have to buy another catback so that it has a flange for the test pipe. I'm just hoping it passes inspection for emissions at this point. I would love a test pipe but don't want it to be welded in. Plus I'm only gonna have this car for a few more months until I get my GSX :hellyeah:

just have a new piece welded in, im sure your local muffler shop could do it for dirt cheap.
Or head up to maine and ill do it for ya LOL

If the test pipe was welded in I wouldnt pass inspection though. At least if it was flanged I could take it out for inspections and then put it back in afterwards.:thumb:

There's no way you'll pass an inspection the way it is if it's all broken up inside you basically already have a test pipe as far as they'll be concerned. The cat isn't serving any purpose other than a rattle trap at this point.

Any muffler shop can replace it and add flanges so it's easily removed later in favor of the test pipe they can make for you at the same time.

So most likely if I want to pass inspection I'm gonna have to get a cat though right? :( I'm just tired of spending money on this car when Im trying to save for a GSX

If your not getting a check engine light you should be ok . They are just going to make sure that you have a cat if its there then you shouldn't have a problem.

Just buy a generic cat (ebay) that will fit over your pipe and either have a shop cut out the old and weld in the new or cut it out yourseld slide it in and clamp it in. Your only looking at about a $100 bill with the cat and the shop bill.

I agree. And generic cats are really cheap to buy too. And it's true that if your check engine light isn't on you may pass the test, but it's not for sure.
