Random 2g head issue...

I just ran into somthing very random and am curious if anyone else has dealt with this....so I got to cleaning my 2g head while it's off and noticed a small piece of aluminum debris lodged deep in one of the coolant passages in the head...it moves around but seems too big to remove, I assume it's from when the head was cast but wonder if I should leave it or continue to attempt remove it...

Got any pics? I personally would remove it. Wouldn't want that think somehow getting in the motor. It's also restricting coolant flow im sure and that can't be good.

I have to say I agree, i really don't want to put that head back on with that in there...I've spent an hour trying to get it out but it's in there, it's deep enough that I don't think I can get a picture in which you can tell what's going on...I'm going to mess with it some more in the morning so maybe I can get a picture then..

Good chance it is just cast slag from when the head was poured.

It will rattle around and move a bit.

But since its been doing it for years by now, doubtful it will cause any harm or issue.

Just because it may have been there for years doesnt mean the motor was running that whole time, ornthat it hadnt failed once before in it's life.

The motor this head came off of was a single owner tsi I just bought with only 39k on it...more to that story another day. Yea it's defiantly a piece of slag, In my attempt to get it out I was able to chip a tiny piece off but the larger chunk has pretty much disappeared...can't hear it clinking around or anything. Called my local machine shop, which will soon get this head and asked what they though of removing it...the guy said that's so common I would t worry about it. That said I tend to worry about everything so hopefully it shows again so I can try to pull it out..

you can always try and get a high pressure air hose and try to plug all other holes besides the one containing the slag and force it out, or at least get it into a position you can grab it with something

Yea that will be my next attempt, not sure how else to get it to surface. The issue I had when I could see it was that it is physically larger then any of the openings so that made it tough to get out. I did break a tiny piece off of it maybe the size of a couple pieces of sand though .

im a welder/fabricator by trade and im still kinda stumped on how to get it out haha. slag typicaly (in welding/cutting applications) is very brittle , of course i dont know much about casting slag but i think air may be your best bet. unless you take it to a machine shop

I actually preferred to have the machine shop take it out but when I called the guy told me they won't even try if it's larger the openings..that's when he told me it was common and wouldn't worry about it... I hope I can get it to resurface and can post a few pics

yeah get some pics if you can. as long as it doesnt get lodged in place and plug an opening then it shouldent be a big deal

Well I shook the head and got it to fall back to the opening...then after an hour of messing with it I was able to pull it out enough to break it into pieces inside the coolant passage...it put a small dent on the end of the coolant passage but what's worse dime sized slag in there or a scratch or two in the aluminum. Maybe that's the wrong way to look at it but I was very limited in my options, anyways im glad to have that junk out and kinda shocked that it was that large. Thanks for the input everyone!

I just use a long punch and hammer out the slag. Lots of it in the coolant and oil passages of the head, at least mine had a lot.
