radio wont turn off...help!!!

my cd player wont turn off after i turn off the car unless i turn my headlights on or if i manually turn off the radio...whats wrong? wheres the short??? the cd player wasnt always like this it only started about 3 weeks ago. any ideas?

hey man whats up. I can help you out but I need some more info. Stock or aftermarket radio? If aftermarket, are you using a harness or is it hardwired in? It turns off if you turn ON the headlights? or when you turn the headlights OFF? If we can't figure this out on here, just swing by after work and we'll rip it apart

you might have crossed your remote wire/power wire with the interior light wire.

its an aftermarket cd player and i used a harness to put it in...this wasnt always a problem it just started happening one day. The cd player will stay on when i take the key out if my headlights are off but if i turn the headlight switch on with the key out of the ignition then the radio will turn off.

I'm assuming when the car is on and the headlights are on, the radio stays on? You've got a crossed ground somewhere. Either that or you wired the remote turn on to a power source that has a delay (aka the windows on our cars are functional for about 20 seconds after the key is removed, but once the door is open power is cut off). Perhaps you wired the power into a source like this that will remain on a few minutes after the car is shut off. Try shutting off the car, leaving the radio on... walk away for about 5 minutes, then come back to see if it is still on. If it is no longer on, problem solved.

there's also a chance the dimmer or illumination wire could be causing the problem.

These guys are probably right. I would rip it apart anyways just to see if you have a frayed wire thats touching another wire or grounding you out.
I had a problem with my stereo in my truck. It would cut in and out and i thought it was the radio and i took it out and, under warrenty, had the whole thing resoldered. Well it kept happening so I just said **** it in frusteration. One day i took my door covers off and it ended up being a grounded wire from when i replaced my speakers that was starting to fray.
It always helps to check your work, EVEN when you think you did it right.

I'll bet the ignition and illumination wires are crossed somewhere, or shorted. When you take apart your console and look at the harness, pay close attention to the orange/white striped and red wires (on the aftermarket head unit). I believe those are the black/white and green/white wires on the OEM harness.

I guessing you have your radio wired up the wrong way. Try to see if you didnt hook it up to the yellow battery wire. Hopefully you bought the installation harness for the CD player. You have to hook the power wire of the CD player up to the red wire so that there is not constant power to the CD player. The battery wire will provide constant power. It might not be that though because my friend is having the same problem in his Subaru. Except he has to turn the windshield wipers on.

ok thanks guys ill check it out but not today we are supposed to get a lot of snow and its pretty cold out so i dont feel like sitting outside right now. ill let you know what happens
