The '97 Talon finished 18th overall and 2nd in class after 14 hours of hard racing. The field started with 90 cars and about half finished. This is a fun event. Full out racing for two days, and to get beat by an AWD Audi isn't bad.

We ran strong until the slave/master cylinder for the clutch started to give up. We filled and pumped every pitstop. Last 3 hours we were only able to run in 3rd gear because shifting became very difficult. The car finished very strongly and will run again.

For those skeptics out there, this is grass roots racing at its best, some of it done tongue in cheek, but I guarantee you that this is real racing and real fun.

A summary video of the race will be available in a few days. I will post it when I can. There was a lot of good driver's view in car made along with full course view from trackside.

Sounds like alot of fun and that's what it's all about.:thumb: I'm interested to hear more about this.:hmm: Thanks for the update DKBlakey and looking forward to the summary video.:D

I really want to do this when it comes to summit point next month. It says you must buy and track prep the car for $500 or less, how do you prove how much you have into it? And is it 500 retail, because I can get a lot of things at dealer cost, or used from the classifieds, not to mention the garage full of stuff I've hoarded off other cars. Good luck.

The way it works if that you buy a car. Most people "save" them from scrap yards. Our club picked up ours cheap because he either had to accept our $100 offer or pay $50 to have the scrap yard take it.

All the repairs also need to be done using this $500 budget. We lucked out with our car. It needed all the fluids flushed and some hoses replaced.

Now, if the judges don't believe that you paid as little as you did, they can assess a penalty. 1 lap for every $1 over $500 that they think you spent.

Safety gear is not included in the $500. You'll need a cage, racing seat, harness, and more.

------------

You prove how much you spent by showing receipts. Also take a peek at entry fees. I can't remember what they are off hand (because our club's fees are going to be paid by the school anyway :p ).

I don't believe a TSI would hold up for 14 hours, but certainly I could not have gotten one for $500. I would love to see one on the track. I bet it would be very quick and sticky. An AWD Audi beat us quite handily, but if we had not had slave cylinder issues and lost our clutch (3rd gear only last three hours) we would have been right with him.

Actually I gave $350 for the car and sold some glass and parts off it. Replaced two idler pulleys and a timing belt and two intake valves and installed Energy Suspension motor mount bushings. Safety equipment, tires, wheels, brakes, cage, etc. don't count. I netted out at $609 but they gave us credit for our theme (Eagle Scouts) and honesty and some nice bribes (which are encouraged).

We look forward to the next event at Carolina Motorsports Park in the Fall.

Actually it is one lap per $10 over, but if you have a good theme, can fib a little convincengly, and have some nice "tokens of appreciation" for the judges, you may come out even. We did. It is not about the win, it is about the drive and the fun and the other people/drivers. It is a GREAT time, even as a spectator.

don’t forget that the rules allow the officials the ability to purchase your car outright for $500 after the race. so if you cheated the system and put some extra money into the car, there is always a chance that you could lose it for only 5 bills...

Ah. Sorry about the mix up. It's been a while since I looked at the exact rules. We're still trying to get the funds together to get the cage welded in. We're hoping to hit a race this fall, but chances are it won't be ready until next summer. Penn State only gives our car club $500 a year for all our stuff.

(If anyone would like to sponsor us, we'll put nice big logos on the car for you. An official sponsorship package will be ready once school starts up again this fall.)

But see, that's where I'm confused, if someone sponsors you and give you a bunch of free stuff, does the retail value go towards the 500 dollars you're allowed?

congrats! did you guys have a visual theme? lemons is great, i considered joining a team once.

...from that pic posted, im seeing you guys had those rare quarter panel windows, and took off the molding...ekk!

Sounds like alot of fun...Justin andI talk about this race ALL the time, and its a big hit with the Neon crowd!

The 1/4 windows are actually Lexan from an old windshield from a friends late modified stock car. All the moulding was removed. The car is so aerodynamic we drove through 1 1/2 hours of hard rain and we didn't get wet inside the car.

It may be a little too slick however as it got very hot in the car in South Carolina. A fan is a must, plus some ducting.
