Montreal,
Hi!
since I bought my 97 TSI, it came with 3" catback of unknown brand, but the muffler was rusted through, looking for cheap and quick replacement I got some Cherry Bomb 3" in and out, offset muffler from Napa and welded it on. Now I'm getting fed up by all the roaring it makes especially on deceleration.

Do they make quiet mufflers, possibly not straigh through design in 3" ? I wish not to hear my exhaust at all while siting at traffic light and idling.

Thanks for any suggestions

my apexi 3" is quiet at idle. it like it, mine only gets louder when i get on it, which is when i want u to hear it. and plus it's kinda cool too cause when im runnin rich and i decelerate it sounds like a v8 rumble

i just had a 3" turbo back system custom made and i used a magnaflow muffler on it and its hardly any louder than the stock exhuast was

Usually a exhaust system that utilizes a 3" piping diameter will produce a deeper tone. The smaller piping diameters will produce a higher pitched tone. I used to have an exhaust system that incorporated 3" piping w/HKS Hiper (or Hyper) muffler...it just rumbled-not annoying like a little Civic with that annoying pissed off lawnmower sound. WTF If you plan on having a muffler shop fabricating your piping and welding on a universal muffler, you may want to ask them to install a resonator (sound dampener). If you decide to add on a resonator, make sure they have a delta-fin type (more free-flowing type resonator) and don't get one that's too long (they come in different lengths).

V-8 rumble huh? ,I'v never heard a 4banger sound like a V-8,sorry bro.I had this dumb kid say that my car sounded like a mustang at a local free car show they do everyfriday in florida when i lived ther,i said to the guy thanks, but in my mind, i was like he must be F*&cking deaf.back on track, the quitest magnaflow mufflers are the street series, the race ones are just as loud as any.mister3rspool has got it right on the money with the resonators.resonator make bad mufflers sound good or better at least.I myself have a powertech muffler and it's very quiet, thats why I bought it,however it's 2.5 not 3".It sounds close to stock from 45-65 mph on regular accelerating and below 3K rpm as well. Now that i put my 3" downpipe it got a little louder but still quiter then most.

You're right no 4 cylinder car can "rumble" as a v8 does, but mine can sound like a domestic wannabe some of the time, i.e. my wastegate opens ;)

Anyways I have Full ATR Turbo Back 3" exhaust and it's relatively quite to any other import I've ever heard with an exhaust. It very low hum at idle and increases in a resonating sort of tone all the way through the rpm's. Never gets high pitched or draws too much attention.

Well the WRX's have that v8 sounding rumble. Actually, maybe not... but they sound very beastly for a 4 banger with the right exhaust set up..

I had the same thing on my old GSX. It seemed very quiet when I was in it or next to it but if I went inside and closed the door I could still hear it. I liked it a lot, very deep.

I have a 3" turboback on my car now with some off brand muffler and it's a lot louder, especially when you're on the highway going to the DSM Shootout with no radio ROFL .

I use a Vibrant 3" - 18" resonator and a Magnaflow 3"inlet, 3" two tip outlet muffler. The car sounds good, better imo then just about any prebuilt system out there. The exhaust note is just a deep roar on wot and a low pitch purr at idle. I had my system tested by an audio shop and it came to 68db at idle and 95 at wot.

I added the resonator in as a second thought due to the high resonance inside the car when cruzing, it would make the whole damn car buzz...

Magnaflow muffler

Vibrant resonator

They definitely do sound very aggressive, thanks to their boxer engines.

i have greddy sp2, quiet when driving loud when you step on it (rumble sounds not nbrrrrrrrrrrphptpptpttp *civic*)

I'm looking to do a custom 3" exhaust pretty soon and was planning to get a relatively long resonator. Can you please explain what is "too long" and a reason why longer is bad other than the generic "it is more of a restriction"?

Thanks.

i'm going to be buying an exhaust pretty soon...I'm wondering the same things. I want mine as quiet as possible.

What about the thermals? Are they on the quiet side or louder? I have never heard this exhaust or been able to find any sound clips of it on a dsm.

i have a thermal r&d muffler. 2.5" downpipe to high flow cat, to 3" thermal r&d catback, to muffler.

here's a clip of it: http://www.beatshack.com/exhaustvid.avi

in this clip is does sound a bit like a dump truck LOL but it doesnt sound *quite* like that in real life.. my little digicam doesnt have a good mic.

Hope this helps! I'm very happy with the Thermal R&D 3" catback.. stainless steel and mandrel bent!
