Raleigh,
Alright I can tell the topic has long been beaten dead, but i must continue really quick. The breather hose coming out of the side of the valve cover ( turbo 2g dsm here) should either be replaced with a filter or catch can, and the hole from the intake should be plugged correct? This keeps oil and vapoors out of your intake and running through your intercooler and pipes, etc. From what I can tell the breather filters are much cheaper (around $10), and the catch cans are anywhere up to $100. I couldn't find where they are compared in any threads. Is there a significant difference in either, or will the breather filter do just fine, and my wallet at the same time? Any responses would be appreciated. Thank you!

P.S. Are there any companies that are known for making better performing breather filters if that is the way to go? I went to advance auto and they have some random Intimidatior filter. Any better options?

Just putting a breather filter on the nipple of the valve cover will leak oil all over. plus they don't fit so well. you'll have to put a piece of fuel line or hose to get the right diameter.

you can do 2 things to the PCV valve if you want to. 1, dissasemble it by breaking it and jb welding it back together without the guts inside. 2, if you have a spare intake manifold laying around, use the nipple on the underside for the brake booster and thread it carefully into the valve cover. this will eliminate the check valve and the lessen the possibility that it gets blocked.

get a catch can with 2 ports and connect both. jegs has a decent size one for cheap.

just run the line to the street. its free and works perfectly.

IF the filter is there. why would it leak oil all over? Or if it does, why would it be suggested as a solution?

the oil will leak out through the filter. Get a catchcan.

what he said.

i've got a K&N breather if you want it, cheap. it even comes with a custom sized hose so it fits on the nipple. let me know.

how much you want for it? I need one too and I'm from the chicago area as well.

I couldn't even find that K&N made a breather filter. where did you get it and what is the exact name for it? IF that's so, i should be able to just roll to advance auto and pick one up

I was thinking about just those $10 ricer breather filters that have no way to catch the oil. Those start leaking within a week ... at least on my car they did.

I'm with Defiant. There is baffling inside of the valve cover that is suppose to help prevent oil from dumping out like a water gun. I wouldn't run it to the ground without a filter either. Sometimes you could have vacuum there and suck a lot of harmful crap into your engine. If you live on a gravel road or ever drive down them, defiantly don't do this without a filter on the end. Do as I say not as I do haha I still need to throw my filter back on...

Yeah, that's a good point. Now that I remember, I actually did put another filter on the end a while back because of that. No, really I did. I should probably also put one onto the PCV hose too that's now just hanging down, since I replaced the PCV valve with a straight fitting.

I've never understood putting an intake filter on a breather. As you notice, they emit more fumes than they take in fresh air. The hotrodders started this trend in the sixties, and gooey, oil-covered motors have been common since.

You can't always just do what you see in pictures. Escpecially if it's a clean enough car to take a picture of.

well my reason for doing it was because it kept oil out of the intake piping. My intake and intercooler piping was always really nasy, but then with it done this way the pipes were MUCH cleaner.

what about extending the hose to go to the ground and attaching a filter at the end of it there? I really like the way the breather looks coing off the valve, but if it's gonna SPEW oil, then the hell with that.

I have decide buying a fuel filter for $3 is by far the best way to go. Thanks for all the input everyone
