Hi, i have been having a problem with my clutch i beleive ever since i got my car, only drove it 5 days. I posted about it before thi nking it was possibly crankwalk. Not the case luckily. before i pull the tranny off is there anythin i could check with the clutch first in case it is somehting easier? what happens is there is a loud knocking and clicking noise that comes from the clutch and tranny area when i turn the car on. As soon as i push the clutch peddle in it completely stops! That is what got me to beleive it is something in the clutch. ###### tob or cracked flywheel or something like that. So i am planning to take the tranny off this week and check it out, but figured if there was something easy to check before i go and do that whole process that would be better to check that first. The clutch peddle also sticks just a little bit after pushing it in. And also it has gotten much harder to get into 1st gear through the 5 days i drove it. was fine at first and then got harder and harder each day untill it was vry hard to get it in. Would that most likely be related? or somehting like a fork or synchro?

Ok well if people have any ideas or suggestions of what to check into first before taking off the transmission that would be very helpfull.

Thanks alot ---ryan.

Easy...your throwout bearing is gone. Since you have the tranny out, i would suggest a new clutch and resurfaced fly wheel and that should fix everything

Well thats what i was thinking it was the tob. But i am asking if there is something i should check to make sure it is not somehting else very easy before i go through the whole process and ordeal of taking of the tranny and checking it and putting it back on.

Also does this problem sound like a tob to most poeple? Does that make a rattle noise, an completely stop when the clutch is engaged?

I had the same problem with mine a couple months ago. I thought it was my throwout bearing too. I took my trani out and replaced the throwout bearing the clutch and the flywheel and I still had the same problem. I had to take my trani out a second time:mad: , and I took it to a trani place and my second gear was bad, somehow two teeth came completely off my second gear, and the fork that holds the gear was broke in half. I would take my trani in and have it checked out first and make sure your gears are good:thumb: . and u might as well change the clutch flywheel and throwout bearing and fork while your at it..good luck bro and hope this helps.

Yours sounded like that with the clutch in and out right? His is just with the clutch in.

Ok thanks, yaeh it is only making that sound when i take my foot of the clutch peddle, as soon as i push it in it goes away and sounds great.

If it does turn out to be a tob, is there a certain one that someone would suggest to buy to put in? As it seems that the tob is a common problem.

Ok on a very tight budget right now if i replace the flywheel how much would a better one cost me to put in? and a good tob(saw some for like 25 bucks, are those fine?) I am going to be doing the work with a freind so i dont mean with labor or anything what the costs would be. thanks.

Stock tob bearing is fine(about $25). If your flywheel is NOT cracked or does NOT have bluish, burnt looking spots on it, its perfectly fine(lightly colored is ok), just have a clutch shop turn the flywheel for about $30. Look at all the springs on your clutch, including the thin metal between the clutch surfaces, should not have obvious wear/tear/damage(WILL cause cluttering noise on engagement/disengagement). Should only take you an hour to take FWD tranny off. You can check the tranny yourself by turning the input shaft of the tranny by hand in each of the gears(gears 1-5 and reverse). Should turn by hand smoothly with slight resistance and NO noise. Also open the drain bolt on the tranny(22mm socket or wrench), and drain into clean container and use a clean magnet to see if you have any metal particles(very little is ok), but if you see bits of metal, thats bad. Also not a bad time to change your transmission input shaft seal($10, a little more difficult, just an option, not necessary), so you don't leak transmission gear oil all over your clutch one day. IMPORTANT!! If quality work is important, then when you reinstall/replace your pressure plate(goes over clutch), TORQUE the bolts AND TORQUE them in MULTIPLE STEPS and a CRISS CROSS PATTERN, example, start torquing criss cross to 10ft lbs on up(I believe torque is about 16ft lbs, so 2 steps). Other people may think this is stupid or overkill, its YOUR car, but you can overtorque your bolts and have either the pressure plate uneven or the bolts shear off under VERY HARD acceleration(yours is stock, so no issues, good tip if you get over 300hp on a FWD). I've removed/reinstalled/rebuilt 4 manual trannys. I guess this is more of a tech article but since I'm a "newbie" this is the only post I can post in until I earn more reputations points, hint* hint* : ) I really didn't mean to make it this long, but I hope you find it useful. PM me if you have any questions.

Ok thanks alot, will definately check those things out as soon as i remove it. So i wouldn;t have to replace the clutch? The owner before me replaced it not too long ago(must have messed something up) so i figure it is ok. I dont really like the clutch(very light) but as for a short of money will have to do if it is ok to leave in.

Anyone know how much a shop would usually charge to replace it? I am planning on doing it with a friend if he still can, but dont have much free time at all right now so just in case would like to know the approx. cost.

Also why do i keep being warned? I have gotten 2 of them now, and i have no idea why? Is it because i made 1 simple spelling mistake or something? This is a car forum not a grammer one i thought. Dont understand that.

Anyways let me know if anyone has more ideas about this. thanks.

Ok i have posted a few times about this. I a having a problem in my clutch i beleive(most likely tob) not sure though. I had a family friend coming to do the fix for me(taking off the tranny and checking it out and all) but he can;t do it now, and i dont have the time nor the knowledge as of now. I was wondering if people know the approximate cost it would be to take it to a place to have the transmission taken off and to see what is wrong fix it and then put it back together?

If anyone knows someone in orange county nu that is good or cheap that would be very helpfull. There is a Lee Myles near me that i was thinking of bringing it to. They said maybe like 550 for the job with parrts, but if it is just a tob there arent many parts right? Only like a $25 part. Or would i need to replace the clutch as well?

I was really hoping to do it myself or with a freind but dont know if that can happen now, so want to know how much it is going to set me back or if anyone here can do it for a good price? Bought the car about a month and a half ago, only drove it 5 days and then this happened.

So please if anyone can guide me anywhere to a good place locally or have any information that would be good. thanks ----ryan.

1 word of advice. If you are going to take off the tranny then replace the clutch, flywheel, TOB (OEM), and possibly the pivot ball and clutchfork. It will just save you the headache down the road. It will also save you alot of money if you do not do your own work.

edit* - Also I don't know how far Warrensburg is from Monroe but if you could go there I would highly recommend R&D Transmissions, the guy was one of the nicest guys I have ever dealt with. I used his shop when i took my tranny out to have it rebuilt.

Ok thanks alot. didn't think about replacing those parts. What do you think of any of the ebay clutch's? i have another post today should be a little below this one that shows a link to those clutches i am talking about. I do plan to do some mods to this car adding horsepower so would be nice if i do replace the clutch to upgrade it from oem.

That town i beleive is a couple of hours away from me thanks for the suggestion though.

Do you know how much they would charge approximately to take off, check, fix and put back on the tranny and clutch would be? not including the parts. Just for the labor costs?

i live in port jervis, if you're in monroe which i think i saw you were i can do you swap. only thing is we'd have to do it at the garage my father works at. we'd have to bring the flat bed to pick up the car i'd have to find the price on that.. and we charge 30 an hour. swap is based on labor rate which i just checked all data and clutch is about 7 hours labor, we'd have to take the tranny out to make sure thats what the problem is and repalce it so figure about 210 for labor (if it's a clutch) and probably 100-150 for tow, if it's the clutch and you have the money for everything we could do it on 1 sunday. also if you're interested you can email me at [email protected] my name is bert
