Hi, there folks, I plan buying a 91 talon tsi (AT) but the car has no engine. I've installed headers and a intake on 99 Galant, but I've never did anything as big as putting a engine in a car. I'm no idiot when it comes to cars but I know its not as simple as just dropping the engine in the car. What are some good preperation tips before I start such as preparing the motor mounts, engine to tranny connection and getting the engine in the car right or any other things I need to know. I'm just doing some research before I get in over my head. Thanks.

If the tranny is still in the car, you can leave it in and slip the motor in with it installed. You want the motor to be fully assembled. Motor Mounts, Intake, Turbo/Exhaust Manifold, Fuel Rail/injectors, all accessories and belts. (If you leave the accessories off it does free up some more room to cheat the motor in.)

As a rule of thumb I always remove the hood

Leave the radiator out so it does not get damaged

I use the windshield wipers to hold the electrical harness and throttle cable out of the way when muscling the motor

Having the battery and battery tray out helps with some room too

Don't forget to replace any old or deteriated hoses

These are just the basics I've learned through the years, if you have anymore questions just ask.

Make sure to fully set the torque converter in the tranny.Leaving the tranny in the car is easier to some people depending if you have help.

+1 I'm doing the same thing you are. And I thought I was the only one who uses the wiper trick.

What do you have you lift the motor, car and tranny? You should do things that are near impossible to do while the motor is out. Change the knock sensor, get new hoses, Do you have abs (now is the time to remove it), check gaskets, new timing belt maybe, can of electrical cleaner and clean connections, cv joints, polyurethane motor mounts also change your oil pan gasket. Do things that are common sense need to be done or would be easier with the motor out, most of these things are cheap and require no hassle, its just the rest of the removal that is usually the most difficult but the hard part is done.
