,can i drive my car with leaking rack??? Today,i washed my car,and when i moved ,i saw a huge puddle of power steering fluid under my car.So i traced the leak and it was coming from the rack.So if ill take the belt off of power steering pump ,would i be able to drive??? i know its gonna be pita to steer on a low speed, but its better then nuttin,My car is a dd and cant wait till i get another rack ..... so help me out fellas ...... thanks....

Yes you can still drive with a leaking rack... We would assume that you have a couple of options here. 1. Keep on your belt and keep adding fluid. 2 Could just be seals in the rack itself. Ohh wait, even though you would take the belt off wouldn't help. your steering still gets its play from the rack itself. Disconnecting your belt would just give you no power assist. So it's a weekend right now I'd say take out the rack and see if the seals are shot, and rebuild it. Or buy a new rack and install it.. Good luck..

i cant take your option of adding fluid and drive, because its leaking like crazy,on my way from car wash i poured 2 bottles of power steering fluid.and when i gor home not even a mile driving, the whole fluid was gone..... So if i take off the belt from a ps pump, ill be getting that stupid annoying noise right???

OHH snap, that much fluid...WOW...I wouldn't think you would get the noise since you won't have power assist. The noise comes when you pump is dry or going out. Since the pump won't be functional you shouldn't have the noise. So untill you get the rack fixed or a new one, prepare to grow some more muscles....LOL

dont risk ruining your ps pump by running the bearings dry.. pull of the belt until you can fix it right..

well im not a newbie LOL i know that driving without a fluid you are damaging the ps pump.Thats why i asked "is it good to drive a car without a belt" ;)

yeaah, but it was dark when i took a look at the leak, could the rack leak that much??? or there is something else it could be ,3 years ago when i was a newbie to dsm,i took a car to a shop to fix the rack, because back then it was leaking too,so they replaced it i payed 5 hundred something. And now. after three years, its leaking again :((((

Now sir the ? is did they replace it with a new rack or a reman? Or did they even replace it at all, they could have just put new seals in it and sent it back to you. If thats the case, They should have put some kind of warranty on the rack...One more ? Do you ever fully extend the rack? You know all the way left, all the way right? That could have been a contributing factor to the demise of the racks seals..

noo i didnt.they gave me a 2 years warranty on a re manufactured rack, the shop did the work, cause i dropped the car to them and they replaced the rack.Ohh BTW on my way to carwash i hit a speed bump, and i felt ,that my exhaust touched that ,so maybe somehow i damaged the rack.... i dunno.I just checked the new racks price, and my eyes almost rolled out.Prob gonna find a manual rack and call it a day.My brother talon is parted out and he still has a rack on his car,but i dont want to put it on,because who knows when ist gonna start leaking :(
