What makes a quicker, or longer spool time? I always see these hondas with instant spool time. As soon as they give a little gas, you can hear the turbo. What is it that makes theres spool so quick, and ours at around 3k on 16's.

I know the size of the turbo effects it, but I have seen some with pretty big turbos and still spool quick as hell!

There's a LOT more to it than that. There are several factors that come into play, such as displacement, compressor size, turbine size, intercooler piping length and diameter, exhaust setup, camshaft size, tuning, head ports, compression ratio, and on, and on....

You can't just make a blanket statement that says "Hondas spool faster"...especially when the most important factor, displacement, is largely in the DSM's favor.

Its not a blanket statement, when 100% of hondas I have seen spool instantly. I am not stating they do, I am stating what "I" have seen. Was curious on to why that was.

If 100% of the Honda's you have seen spool instantly, then why not ask them what they're doing? Like stated you ARE making a blanket statement. And as mentioned above, the majority of Honda's are lacking in a key department for spool- displacement.

If they're "spooling" instantly then they don't have a big turbo. If you put say a 16g on a 9.0:1 B18 VS a 9.0:1 4g63, ignoring flow characteristics of the head and manifold (lets assume piping is identical in length, and size, and the head and exhaust all flow exactly the same) a 4g63 will spool faster simply due to the .2L of displacement.

You can't really fool physics. If you are hearing them blip the throttle with small displacement with a big turbo and you "hear" it spool, it's just the whistle you are hearing-and that doesn't translate to actual spool time. You can hear the whistle from a turbo well before boost hits hard.

At the same time, if they've got teeny stock runners then they can hit boost pretty quick, but will ultimately be limited in total airflow due to small runner size.

Just like a 2g head will spool a 14b, 16g, etc, faster than 1g head....runner size. But the 1g will make up for the lag with greater overall airflow-especially up top.

Tons of variables....but hondas don't just spool up instantly in general with huge turbos because physics simply won't allow it.

As previously stated, ask those honda guys exactly what their setup is to get your answer for what their cars are doing.

Great logic. Really well stated and i can tell the research is solid.

t28 + 11:1 compression = insta-spool
This is the honda equation

Higher compression does not, really help spool. It helps more with off boost power.

Hondas spool so much faster and make more power per lb of boost because their engines are more efficient and breath better then ours. How else do you think their stock NA motors make more power then our non turbo motors, and with .2L less displacement then us.
