question about socketed ecu

any problems running one without a chip or anything in the socket? I bought one used and want to make sure it works correctly before putting in the chip.

You have to put a chip in it, that's where the information is stored at.

I'm not sure if you understood my question. I know the chip has the information stored on it. I was wondering if the ecu will work without a chip in the socket (the ecu came from the factory without a socket). I bought a used socketed ecu and would like to make sure it works before installing the chip--troubleshooting purposes.

You have to have a chip in the socket. If there is no chip in the socket there is no way for the ECU to get the information off the chip.

On a EPROM ECU all the code is stored in the EPROM, so without the EPROM installed it won't boot. The Non-EPROM ECUs have the code written into a ROM section inside the processor and they are the only ones that came from the factory without a chip, and they have no place to put one.
