im getting ready to start my car up on Sunday for the first time with my new motor and mods and have a couple questions.

  1. i have my downpipe exhaust but not the rest of it. Do i need the rest of exhaust installed for the downstream O2 to read or can i do fine without it?
  2. speaking of O2, do i need to have a wideband or can it wait? im looking at getting the Innovative LC2 Lambda O2 set up but not at this moment if i don't have to.
  3. do i need to have a MAF translator? or can that wait too?
All i want to do is fire it up, tune in the AFPR, set up the ECMLink V3, heat it up and cycle the thermostat. I won't be driving it til the spring in which ill do the break in and then get her on a dyno for more tuning.

No you don't need the rest of the exhaust.
If I recall correctly in DSM link you can simulate the rear 02 sensor, its been awhile so someone correct me if I'm wrong. I ran a wideband in the rear 02, deleted the rear 02 sensor completely.
You can adjust the FPR by turning the pump on through dsmlink before you even start the car.
I wouldn't say you NEED a wideband, but it would definitely help, that would be on the top of my list.
I'm assuming you have a GM MAF blow thru setup since you're asking about a MAFT.
If you plan to run the GM MAF straight to the ECU without a MAFT, then you will need the cable you can get from ECM to do so.

Why do you want to fire it up now if you aren't going to be driving it? If you search around you will get different opinions on how to break in a new motor but almost everyone will agree the worst thing you can do is let it idle. Most recommend driving it immediately under load to help the rings seat.

I'd recommend not firing it up until you are ready to drive it and until everything is ready. You risk doing more harm than good. What if you are running extremely rich and are washing the cylinder walls down with gas, preventing a good seat? You won't know because you don't have a wideband.

I don't know what you mean by "tune in the AFPR", but if you mean set base fuel pressure, then you don't need the car running to do that. Just turn on the fuel pump(using Link) to set it.

As for "set up the ECMLink V3", car doesn't need to be running to do that either. You can connect to the ECU and configure all your settings and have it all ready.

Finally, when you say "do i need to have a MAF translator? or can that wait too?", again, not really sure what you are asking without more detail. Are you asking if you can fire up a brand new build without a MAF at all? The answer is no. Provide some more details if your set up and get some better answers.

Edge1g, you're right. It will be better to tune if i can drive it so i will be putting my wheels back on. Reason i didnt wanna drive it is bc my suspension is shot but that wont matter. Ill just drive it.

My buddy John (DSMRaver) will be bringing me an Innovative MTX wideband so that is taken care of now.

Yes "tune in AFPR" meant setting the base fuel pressure and i didnt know you could do that through Link. Ive never used Link so im learning a lot right now.

DSMRaver will also be showing me all the configurations on Link and how to use it

As for the MAFT, i misunderstood its function and application. I dont know it all so im glad people can help me out and clarify. I'll be running the stock 2G MAF for now, and running speed density later on.

I'm glad you are deciding to put the finishing touches on the car before firing it up. Definitely get the wideband installed and wired into the ECU for logging in Link before starting the car. As for Link, if you want to have your settings reviewed before you start, that might not be a bad idea. Post a log over in the tuning forums.

Also, just to clarify, you dont set base fuel pressure using link. You can just use Link to turn on the fuel pump (you can do that without link). Once the pump is on, you set the base pressure. You should still check base pressure with the car running and vacuum line removed.

i was just checking out the How-To videos on ECMLink's website and they are really easy to follow and understand. I'll def post some screenshots once i get it running decently, or if i don't get it running decently...

Thanks for the suggestions
