Purchase help!

Ok. I found a 1998 Eagle Talon Tsi AWD that I am very close to purchasing. There are a few things that are worrying me. The engine was replaced and modded. What should I look for that would tell me of danger coming down the road?

I would really like to make this purchase, but dont want to end up paying the cost of the car again just to get it up to speed(in more ways than one).

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The mods on the car are as follows:

new/used engine with 61k on it
new clutch, belts, intercooler pipes, high flow catback
new injectors, fuel pump, and brake lines

Are you worried about the condition of the engine? Do a compression test that will tell you whats up. Other then that look for rust and just give it a good inspection. good luck!

What is a compression test and how would I go about doing that?

funny...um..can you take it to a mech?

well a comp test checks the comp on each cylinder. if they are all withing 5psi of each other then its cool like say 170-172-175-165

How much is the car...
if i was you i would buy it if around 5000 and then keep in mind that the engine will blow...once it does build a 6bolt and drop it in....

i would get it if the price was rigth...as for the blowing up of the car..im just paranoid cause mine blew up as in the timing belt skipped a bunch of teeth while i was doing like 80 on third gear...imagine what i felt knowing that i had just bought the car like 3 weeks ago....sucky

They are asking 8600, but I wouldnt pay that much, I plan on offering 6500 and negotiate from there. Is he too high? Or am I too low? Its hard to go off KBB or NADA with the number of mods he has.

I also plan on using this car as a daily driver, there should be no issues with that, right?

With all those mods I think he more then likely raced it.. But he might not go that low since he put a lot of money in the car. Just ask him what kind of oil he ran, how often he drove it… blah blah. Don’t want ya getting burnt on it. And does he look like a ricer kid that had money? (Just curious)

be careful , some deals that seem to be too good.... are.

Get the car totally checked out by someone else. Not to be mean but you dont know much about the car but this kid does. Its easy to hide stuff from you.

Take it to a reptable shop and ask them to give it a good lookin at.

Slim to none; but you do find good ass deals some time. Good luck, hope to here good news. But ya bring some one along that knows about DSM's! I really don’t think he is willing to let him take the car to a mechanic before you buy it (unless maybe cash in hand?) But I could be wrong.

a un modded 98 AWD is worth like 8k. he is not hi at all.

8600 for AWD and that many mods...from my point of view i would offer 7500 and get it...cause i would just build a 6bolt for it..
that sounds like a dam good deal to me. Here in oregon a car like that may go for 10gs
