Punishment goes roadracing, where to start?

Great. Good to see some DSM vendors step over into road racing. Hopefully you can find what you are looking for in a car soon and get started. Good Luck !!

Thanks, I'm hoping to dig up something fairly soon so I can get to work on it. I'm sure I'll be picking your brain for some pointers once we find one.

Well obviously your not going to win anything with that thing. ROFL
On a more serious note..good luck. have fun. be safe.

:p I'm just hoping I can go all season without any major crashes

Pick away Tim...I will help in any way I can so you guys can get out there this season. :thumb:

I'm surprised no body suggested a WRX! I think that word is like swearing on this site, but if you want an AWD drive train this would be your bet!

Also, why not find a cheap 1G awd? Turn up the boost and put a FMIC on there and that would be great fun at any track for the time being! Plus you're that much closer to the platform you'll be using in the end. :thumb:

Not to discredit you in anyway, but you obvious haven't gone road racing...

If you are not trying to discredit me in anyway, why make a remark at all, that in turn has nothing to do with this thread? :hmm: Also, I'm sure Punishment is thankful for your contribution. :applause:

I think the 1g non turbo is an excellent choice for a starter car. Setting and Technique, then comes more power :D

I'm curious on what suspension settings you come up with as the year progresses. Good luck :hellyeah:

But little crashes are ok. It's more fun that way, plus the learning curve is steeper.

I like where you're head's at.

Little crashes are going to happen. Its road racing. Spinning out is going to happen. Its road racing. If you dont spin a few times during practice, you are not pushing the car or yourself hard enough. Thats what practice is for.

A NA DSM is a great car to start with. Power and big turbos are not always fast on a track. I have seen Miatas fly past Corvettes in corners. I have seen CRX's take fast time of the day at autocross events because they spent all their money in suspension, tires and brakes. Start simple, plan and go from there. Is the best way to attack a road racing project. No plan = almost certian failures.

"People dont plan to fail....They fail to plan"

I'm bringing this thread back from the dead a second time. I've decided just to use my personal 1g as my track car, there are a few NASA events in our region (northeast) coming up so I'm tryinng to get the car setup in time to make them.

The car is more drag oriented the way it sits at the moment but I think I should be able to slowly adapt it over as I get more involved in this style racing. I need to get a set of tires and brakes before I hit the track, the car will be street/track for awhile so I need to figure out what would work best for both.

I will try to keep this thread updated, and hopefully get more pointers from all the experienced roadracers here on dsmtuners

Tim

I don't see how using a 1g would be a problem at all at a track event. It's not autocross. You most likely will never see the dreaded power steering cut, though if you do I'd like to hear about it. I've got a ksport suspension from 2-3 years ago on the 1g and it actually handles quite well on the roads around here. Most are broad high speed corners with nothing too tight. About what I would guess to be on a road course. I would be curious though as to what sway bars you are using. I kept the front stock and went with a rear suspension techniques. Good luck and keep us updated!
