Ok so I got the tranny unbolted and for the most part got the block/tranny separated. My head is already off so me and some buddies were going to lift the block/crank out (still has crank pulley, ac compressor and timing belt, took out pistons/rods). We can lift it no problem its just that it feels hung, do i need to take the front cover off to get more clearance on the drivers side to clear the flywheel? or should it just come straight out?

Once the transmission is already disconnected from the engine, the hardpart is already done. Its not much more work to just drop it out of the way and make your project alot eaiser.

I used a cherrypicker and i tried taking the motor out without taking the axles out...long story short i cracked my transmission housing:mad:

I dont know if the 1g is diffrent or somthing but I have had my motor out 4 times(dont ask) and I have never pulled the trans. I just unhook all the trans. mounts and go it gives you enough room to pull the motor, barely.

Yes pulling it from the bottom is easy, if you have a lift. You cant pull it as one unit in a 2g because the transmission mount is welded to the frame and is in the way.(at least it was for me). Putting the motor back in isnt a walk in the park, but its not that bad if the clutch is lined up properly, you play with it for a few mins and it goes right in. I say that but my first time reinstalling the motor took about 45 mins to get it lined up, the last time took about 5. It might be easier to drop the trans, but I think it would take longer putting the car back together. Just my .02 though.

Yeah, cherry picker doesnt get here untill Friday. We were just getting the 7bolt out today, transmission is coming out also, we just wanted the engine out before it got to raining. They are both coming out 1 piece at a time, and going back in together, thanks guys.

I just gotta ask... how are you taking the 7bolt out with a motor hoist?

God knows how I #### it up but it happened. Does a cracked tranny housing make the tranny toast? Just curious dont mean to hijack the thread.

I would just take it all out at once, trannie and engine..Then separate them when on the ground, this makes for a lit faster job and no screwing around. I did mine all by myself with no engine crane, I just lowered the car with my creeper under the engine and trannie. and undid all the necissary stuff. Then jacked the car up while the engine and trannie stayed on the creeper. Then pulled the engine and trannie out from under the car. Since it was on a creeper with good wheels it rolled out nice...

Installing same thing but in reverse.

Once you get past taking your engine out once, you'll be a master and wont have any worries in the future of doing. Trial and error I guess, only if somthing goes wrong. :coy:

Good luck! :thumb:

I was once part of an engine pulling operation where the guy was selling the car with the tranny and all we wanted was the engine. He wanted it out as quickly as possible, so we unbolted the sucker, didn't take off the pullies, and started yanking the thing out with an engine hoist. The pullies wouldn't clear. I wanted to drop her back down and unbolt them, at which point it would clear just fine, but the solution used was to bang on the crank pully with a sledge until it slid past the frame rail. In the process the crank pully was destroyed, which I didn't much care for, but the owner of the engine didn't seem to care.

Moral of the story- you can pull an engine without taking out the tranny if you take off the pullies. But I don't know why you'd want to except in limited circumstances like those above.

its alot easier if it all comes out together.. i have dropped it thru the bottom without a hoist just gotta jack up the car tons but try to find a hoist makes it easier
