Well, as most of you probably already know, im fairly new to these cars. I am in the process of doing my first motor swap and was wondering if it was possible to pull my blown GSX engine out of the top, while leaving my entire drivetrain in tact? I am just curious to get your guys opinions and experience before i go ahead and try it.

Such as? Everything in the car is taken care of except for the fact that i destroyed my head. So now a new engine is going in to replace my stock 6 bolt

you can i have done it in my car you just have to remove more parts . i left my radiator in but its better to remove it because i almost put a hole in it. you remove as much as you can from in front of the motor and when you pull it you kind of have to turn it to the radiator side .

Auto or manual? Either way its not easy in a 2g. Your better off pulling both out. I left the trans all the time in my 1gs after trying it with a 2g I will not do it again. I fought it for almost 2hrs with a friend helping me. I can pull the engine/trans combo and replace it by myself in that timeROFL.

okay cool, yeah everything has been removed that i could besides the intake manifold and alternator. Removed the exhaust manifold, turbo, PS pump, fuel system. etc so i should remove the radiator as well if im going to do it like that?

It's way easier to pull the engine and tranny together. There's not enough room to pull the engine (clutch disk) away from the input shaft of the tranny without disconnecting practically everything on the tranny to move it over (not to mention there's only 1 mount on the tranny to hold it up then).

I suppose you could but it would take much more time. It's much easier and less time consuming to just pull the t-case and pull the motor with the transmission bolted up to the block.

Not to mention it will be much easier to bolt the transmission back up with it out of the car. Good luck and it's a great experience to do it yourself, you start knowing your car much more.

I'd also suggest pulling the axles by just un-bolting the upper control arms from the engine bay instead of un-bolting the lower control arm, etc to pull the axles. Less time consuming again and you wouldn't have to get an alignment after.

Oh and take your hood off ;)

It's way easier to pull the engine and tranny together. I doubt you can even only pull the engine (you can only pull the tranny but I doubt just the engine). Just a fyi I pulled my old block out of my car today while leaving the transmission completely bolted in.

i forgot to mention that when i did it i took the head off and then pulled the block which made it a lot easier .

unbolt all the mounts support trans with jack, drop down the t case, take both manifolds off and take off all accessory pulleys, unbolt drive side half shaft axle from block, you can even leave the wheels on but you might need to remove driver side front wheel to remove the crank pulley give a few shakes while you jack up that engine will come out separate. but it is a bit easier to install engine with trans already bolted.:thumb:

I got sick out pull mine out of the top, so I tried raising the front of the car up and holding it with jack stands and rolled the engine and transmission underneath. I think up the car is easier plus you dont have to raise the engine up really high, I was always afraid i would drop it.

I pulled my motor and left the trans still bolted in. It was very tight on the pulley side but it fit. My trans is auto so i dunno if that makes a difference.

IF you remove the crank pulley, crank bolt, timing cover, water pump, and driver mount bracket than it is pretty easy to pull the engine with the transmission in the car.
