I personally pull the trans out of the bottom and the block out of the top. I have done this by my self and with help and in my opinion the best way. Unless you have a lift then i would drop the whole thing out of the bottom. I would definitely get a manual if you dont have one too. I have unfortunatelly pulled 4 motors and if you have any ques feel free to pm me.

ok i planned on doing that for sure but the 95 engine is already out im just need to pull mine and put it in are all the connecters and stuff in the same position as the 98?

no all i have is a cherry picker LOL and a good buddy helping me out

No. The Cam Angle Sensor is different on the 95-96 cars. That's the only connection that I'm aware of that's different wiring wise. I think the A/C system is different as well.

Back connector for...? If you are talking about the CAS then the 95-96 cars had the CAS on the driver's side and it was located behind the intake cam gear. In 97 they moved the CAS to the passenger side of the intake cam. You'll have to do a little rewiring because the singal sent from the CAS was backwards on the 95-96 cars because it was on the other side of the engine.

Ive pulled and installed 2 engines. It pulls out from the top easy with all the bolt on stuff removed like exhaust manifold, turbo and for more clearance pop out the radiator and fans as an assembly. take as much off the engine that you feel comfortable about taking off and be patient!! Dont forget the vacuum lines under the intake!!

I also left the transmission attached to the engine when pulling and installing

Also drain all fluids so you dont have a mess everywhere

Chris

plastic bags are your friend. I labeled every small bolt just incase. Plus it makes it easier when install time come back around

I just finished pulling my engine about 20 minutes ago. First time I did a DSM and took me about 3 hours. +1 for keeping bolts and nuts in a labeled bag. I keep my stuff in boxes and label it. Also I keep timing components together and exhaust stuff together, etc. I also had the luxury of working with an car lift and air tools, don't know if you have any of that stuff but just take your time.

+1 I do this also. Works great for me. I believe the connectors are different for the a/c but Im not positive. Youll have to look at both of yours.

Whats the reason your doing this swap?

thanks everyone! and i am doing the swap because i bought my 98 eclipse from someone with a salvaged title. but when i took it to a shop to get looked at they told me that the people before me didnt weld the core support on right and its a big POS compared to the 95 shell i just bought for $300. iam doing the swap the 23rd.
WISH ME LUCK!!!!!

Good luck and a bit of advice would be to unplug the harness from theahell but leave all the comnectors plugged into the motor, then you just have to plug it back to the 95 when you drop it in... And label everything, my first time I also took poloroids of everything and how it went and attached it to the parts it went to.

I second the pictures Idea. Not sure about poloroids, we're in the digital era now, hah. But they help to get the proper routing of hoses, and wiring and where components where mounted.

I presume both cars manual or automatic?

I understand the a 98 gsx to a 95 gsx isnt bolt on, but if i take a 95 spyders 4g63t nd its tranny, put the tranny in my 95 eclipse gs and build the new motor mounts, will it just bolt in? Pending i upgrade everything needed (fuel pump, ecu, rad etc etc)

I have a 98 gsx 2g shell I'm selling for $350 if you would rather use that. Since a 4g63 came out of it than you should not have to try and make different motor mounts. Your trying to put a 4g63 into a gs which is a 420a i believe which is a way smaller engine you might run into some issues. If you would like to buy it or look at it email me and i will send you some pictures.

thank you everyone for your help. I ended up pulling engine and tranny fro the bottom because the cherry picker i had sucked. and I'm using a 98 eclipse ECU until i get my socket-ed 95 ECU for my DSM link. Since i am using my 98 ECU i didn't have to re wire cam sensor.:thumb:
