Yes you can but it will be much easier to pull the motor at the same time. If you do it without removing the motor the hard part will be puting it back in.LOL Make sure you have help because those autos are HEAVY!!!!

Cool Thank you John.
I have a cherry picker to help get it out.
Just wanted to make sure there was enough room to get it out.

I always pull the engine and trans together. Much easier that way on a 2G.
It's easy enough to remove the tranny by itself on a 2G, but it's a PITA to put it back in because the engine doesn't like to sit still with only 1 mount holding it in.

It's different on a 1G because the roll stops are on the engine and not the tranny like the 2G models.

I would just drop the trans...
Quick check list.
-Remove crossmember
-remove sidemount intercooler
-Remove some suspension(to get axle out) I remove curved LCA(2 bolts), tie rod end, and upper balljoint and you should have enough room to pop the axle out.
-Unbolt rear trans mount from transmission(be careful with the speed sensor)
-Unplug all the wiring and shifter cables.
-torque convertor bolts
then pull

Paul. If you have 2 people doing the job you can use a prybar to straighten the block out from underneath the car. Makes it alittle easier.

AHHHH That i did not pay attention to.
I haven't gotten it over to the garage here and looked at it yet.
Been working on a 1G and guess i was just assuming it was the same ish.
Find out here in a little bit when i get the car over here and start tearing into it.
So should i pop the axl nut off or not?

I always pull the tranny out and leave the engine in. Just support the engine with a jack and a piece of wook on the oil pan to keep stress off the mount. Then take out the axle and unbolt the tranny. I take it off by getting underneath and just man handling it off the engine and onto the ground. Then to install it i hook the chain onto the bracket for the shift cables and then use the hoist to lift it up to the engine...then back underneath to coax it back onto the engine and bolt it on up. Maybe is it just that I have it down to a science now but I find it easiest this way :D

Sweet Thanks for the help guys.
Stopped by my friends shop and busted the nut loose with the impact.
Getting ready to do start tearing into it.

Thanks again

Also I have a better and easier way of getting the axle out instead of unbolting that top which needs to be put back on using a jack...which is a pain...if you just unbolt the lower control arm that goes from the hub to the shock fork and then to the frame (2 long bolts) let that arm hang and then you are able to pull the hub out and open it up kinda like a door and the axle comes right out without having to undo any of the other suspension or tie rod ends...which makes life so much simpler since those tapered bolts are hard to get back on and tight.

So I just noticed you are in Lima OH. My dad is from there and I also know the Ulands...small world right
