Project Superman: '90 Talon - building my first drag race car

sorry for the thread jack, but you guys agree AEM is a better unit ?

Better then link, yes. Not better then the top Motec units like the m880. But their catchin up.

I saw the new infinity stuff they have not caught up to Motech by any means. I will be switching to either a motec or aem at this point only because what I will be racing the car at this year will require more inputs and internal logging.

Link will work for 90% of the people out there its just a matter of what your goals are and what you need for the car. I still run link and will likely for the first part of the year until I decide if I am putting the gold box back in or giving aem a try.

Give the aem a try. And save the extra $20k the motec would cost and put it elsewhere.

I agree with all of that but that's my point the OP is not a pro tuner and to get his feet wet and kinda get a grasp on tuning the link is much better. Just to clarrify something too AEM Motec ect are much better for getting part throttle and idle out of a setup but I have not seen a night and day difference in closed loop tuning with the different types of tuning setups out there. One may net you slightly more power because it has more control points but V3 has come a long way from the 10 or so points the original link had. It is def not like comparing a AFC to SAFC more like a GT42 to a GT42R

I said AEM is better for a full out drag car that needs more inputs and other things. It does have more programibility but 90% of the people with a DSM would be better of with Ecmlink as it is more then capable of suiting thier needs.

edit, damn i replied to first page stuff some how, i'm up too early to think right, sorry and please delete if a mod hops here and can clean up my mistake

I just spent an hour reading this whole thread waiting for the post that said "had to part out", but it never came. Im just amazed this is still coming along and happy it is still going on. Im deff gonna keep up with this build and look forward to the vid of the first run. Good luck the finish line is getting very close.

Still moving forward with this?

Hey guys, sorry for the lack of updates. I have been having camera issues, as well as, project issues. Slowed me down a bit, but not giving up. I must say this is the hardest thing I have ever attempted to do. It is not easy when you don't have experience, but can't stop now. Camera is working now. Will post some pics shortly.

Superman Update

Hey guys, just a quick update. I will upload more pics this week. I painted the dash, install the staging brake, and mocked up the carbon fiber parts. I also tried my hand at fabrication. I used some aluminum sheet and carbon fiber wrap to cover the center portion of the dash.

Hey guys, just wanted to get your opinion on lug nuts. What do you use at the track. Also do I have to use arp wheel studs or can the factory studs take the abuse.

If you plan on using slicks, extended wheel studs may be required.

the thread engagement on all wheel studs to the lug nut, or lug bolts to wheel hubs, must be equivalent to or greater than the diameter of the stud/bolt. length of the stud/bolt does NOT determine permissibility.

Depends on the track you're at with how strict they'll be. Some tracks have been reported to demand open ended lug nuts.

Superman Update

Hey Guys, Just a quick update. I finally got the suspension installed. I put the car on the ground to see the stance, looks pretty good. Also mocked up the carbon fiber doors, hatch, and hood. Everything looks and fits pretty good. The hatch is slightly higher at the roof line, but it still looks good to me. Installed brakes and ARP extended stud. I tried to use the factor wheel studs but the were too short for the rims. I used a factory window that I was installing on the DD to trim my lexan windshield. Everthing came out well. This project is taking really long to complete. next up, build the engine. I need the engine in the car to measure for the drive shaft. updates coming soon.

Looks really good!

For mock up of some parts / wiring I just tossed in an empty block, head, empty trans case and tcase. Made it easy and it wasn't a pain to put it all in there just for a mock up.

Cool build, even if you don't reach 9s you will have a sick car.

When was the last time this car moved under its own power? Do you have another DSM you have been driving the last 4 years?

(Maybe I missed an update where you have driven the car?)

I can't believe you have stuck with this car for so long without driving it. I would have built a 9sec engine first, then built a 9 sec car (ie, weight, suspension, drivetrain, safety) around that. Your patience and dogged determination is amazing.

Thanks for the kind words. This car has not run since I started the build. I have another dsm that I drive on the street. This Build has been very hard to do. Nothing goes together easy. Plus I don't know what I am doing so I learn everything the hard way. But thanks to great advice from this site and all the races that respond to my questions. Without them I could not do this.

Superman Update

Hey Guys, quick question; I am starting to put the engine together, just wanted to know what you guys use for ring gaps. Thanks.

man i have read this thread a few times with more updates every time, just reading what your doing to it and reading all the others opinions on everything is great the more i read the better my knowledge and understandably on how everything works has given me a lot to think about for when i start my build. reading this is great because when i read a book it puts me to sleep, when i read this i cant sleep haha its like being jacked up on mountain do. well any ways great work keep it up and keep up the updates cant wait to read what you do next to this :)

Hey Guys, quick question; I am starting to put the engine together, just wanted to know what you guys use for ring gaps. Thanks.

I do not build engines on a regular basis, nor do I know what the current hot setup is, but this seems to be some of the best information I could find on the subject starting here http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/cyl...on-wall-clearance-ring-gap.html#post151855751

Maybe we can get some others to chime in on what they are currently having good luck with. :)
