I had a super long post typed out at first but deleted it to be hopefully quick and to the point. I’ve done multiple searches on figuring out where to start with this project I wanted to start with suspension so I read through a lot of threads there, a pinned post said to start with the drivetrain and mainly figuring out the LSD we would want to go with. Plan on making this a drag car that’s still street legal and just a fun project for my dad and I to learn on and have fun with. I would like to start with the drivetrain and suspension stuff first and not have to mess with it again unless stuff breaks down. Going to try to make it so it can handle all of the power we want to have in the far future not sure if that’s possible or a good idea as I am essentially a newb when it comes to cars and mechanics. I have done a lot of suspension work in the past on my 3g when I was younger but my knowledge is still essentially none. Any opinions on where to start would be greatly appreciated and would be nice to know if it will be realistic or smart to setup the drivetrain/suspension now for 500-600whp in the far future. Thank you for your time!

So after more reading I realize that I’m going to have to wait until I get home to understand LSD and differential in general! The airport is not a good environment for me to learn this complicated shit LOL. But I did manage to find good info on potential LSDs to get although I don’t understand how they work completely yet. Looks like the two options are between Quaife or Kaaz. Also read that stronger axles are needed which i figured. Not sure how these upgrades will affect the driving of the vehicle while it’s still stock so need to do some research on that. Also maybe an aluminum driveshaft it says? Have lots of research to do! I know these things seem overkill probably for now but this is where I would like to start if possible. Probably will buy some true coilovers not sure which kind yet. It also says I should stick with a rotor smaller than 12.2” so I can use 16inch wheels.

After more reading looks like people weld their center diff this shit seems to get pretty complicated. Going to try and read more AWD auto drag builds. If anyone has links to some good drag builds let me know please! Gone through a bunch already. Sorry for all the ramble mainly using this to attempt to organize my thoughts.

so what kind of tire are you planning on running? realistically with an auto car most of your drivetrain expense is going to be in building the trans and t case. you dont really need to change the diffs. welding the center diff when you build the trans is a good idea though. with my build im at the point where im upgrading the driveshaft and bracing the transfer case. im running stock differentials (only welded center) and stock axles on a drag radial and cutting mid 1.5 60' times.

I haven’t honestly thought about tires yet trying to figure out all this drivetrain and suspension stuff. Thinking I’ll probably roll the fenders in the back to get more clearance. I imagine if I want to get into 10s in the far future I’ll have to run drag radials. So you don’t think I’ll need an LSD? Just weld that center diff and then build the trans and t-case? What shocks/struts or coilovers are you running?

tires are going to aide in making things last drivetrainwise as well as hold the power when launching. i run the stock front and rear diffs with the center welded as well as front clutches, end clutches, shift kit, and a decent converter. im on drag radials now but switching to a bias ply here soon, and my car is on megan racing coilovers. my car has went 10.80s with a bad fuel pump on just wastegate pressure.

I ran a 10.7 on street tires with a 1.5 60', you can worry about tires later. I've given you sources to start reading up on the auto trans and ways to make it stronger. You are just starting out and are jumping far ahead of yourself. You need to look in to tuning (ECMLink), wideband, fuel, exhaust and induction. Set a goal for the car and build the set-up to work together. When working with an auto, you need to find parts that work more closely together like your turbo/cams/converter so you can get up on the converter and have a usable power band.
