Problem starting the car and a "dying" problem

I've just recently purchased a 1990 Talon Tsi from a friend. Everything on the car is stock except the exhaust. It has a few minor problems that are going to be fixed but a few I know nothing about. The first is with starting the car, sometimes when you turn the key it just clicks and does nothing. If you do it back and forth a few times it will start up. The car has a newer starter about two months old. It was installed at a local Pep Boys while he had it, so I'm not sure if they did something wrong or what I should look for.

The second problem is that if I drive it hard, I guess hard? Shifting at roughly 4.5k or so and shut it off. The next time I turn it on it kind of just bogs out and dies. Then I have to turn it on again hold the gas to idle it at like 1-1.5k RPM's and then it's fine.

Any suggestions or tips are appreciated. - Alex

Have you done the regular tune up stuff? plugs, wires, boost leak test? etc?

Plugs and wires are new. Haven't done a boost leak test yet, will do it sunday though, since it's my only free day.

It sounds like the solenoid is going bad on the starter. I think this is how its done(but not 100% sure) but you may be able to run a toggle switch from the solenoid to the battery and get it to crank that way. Or you could just replace the starter because I'm 90% sure that your solenoid is going bad.

if its just the solenoid, then replace it... it sounds like thats what it is... either that or your battery is bad, but most likely the solenoid... The starter is like 160 but just the solenoid is about 70

If Pep Boys put it in 2 months ago, take it back to them and make them replace the starter under warranty. Just about every starter sold today comes with at least a 90 day warranty.
