I'm doing a head gasket almost about to pull the head off when I ran into this issue. Findnig TDC before pulling off the head....

My cam gears (stock) both have two marks. THe first set of marks are just etched in to the gear and the second set are etched in and a little white. When either set is lined up Cyl #1 seems to go to the top (I have a screw driver in Cyl #1). I'm really confused, I've done the timing belt, but it was a while ago and I don't remember which set of marks I used...

While the cam sprockets have two marks only one set lines up with the dowel pins pointing up. That's TDC on the head.

I found TDC after taking the timing belt cover off. I turned the crank until both timing marks on the crank sprocket and the oil pump sprocket where pointing at 10 o clock and the cam gear marks were aligned.

Head is off... parts come tomorrow. Wish me luck!

Just for reference as long as the head is off you can always align the block and head back the the correct positions before you put them back on without damaging anything. You'll still need to verify the lower balance shaft phasing when you go to put the timing belt on.
