I'm looking to get my timing done and get a new water pump installed because I have no idea when it was last done, the previous owner said the guy before him did it but doesn't know the mileage or have any form of proof.
I called the shop I normally go to and they said it would be 900$ for just timing alone, I'm wondering if this is this pretty average or if I'm getting ripped off?

my second question is does anyone have a recommendation/s for a mechanic in Washington state? I'm located in north Seattle but I'm willing to travel a little bit for a reputable/quality place.

Not only to get my timing done but any other work I would want a shop to do. I've done some looking, and i found a place that mainly focuses on Subarus (most "modified" car mechanics in this area do) but they also do EVO's and basically anything AWD. But they refuse to touch my car, they won't even do an alignment 😕

Are you fairly mechanically inclined? If you answered yes, do it yourself. Don't let it scare you. You have this forum to guide you every step of the way :) FYI, water pump and timing belt are typically done at the same time. And you cant replace the water pump unless the timing belt is removed.

I feel like its something i shouldn't risk messing up

I think that price sounds both normal and like a rip-off: but at least all those parts can still purchased new. There is some debate on which brand of belt to use, and a related part: the hydraulic tensioner. They are often chaned together, though I’ve also heard do the tensioner with every other belt change, not every time. And yes, water pumps too have their allegiances. Usually the discussion is Mitsubishi-brand vs. aftermarket, but you might search the site yourself for some existing posts.
My point is, the labor is the expensive part. You want it to work right and last. If you wanted to wrench on it yourself, it might be different. But no shaming implied. Some folks keep to the driving, nothing wrong with that.
