Cost of gas. Personally, I don't mind paying $3/gal for 110 octane to be run daily which I will be doing especially with these high gas prices. But tuning for 92 octane doesnt hurt either if it realy is your daily driver and you get stuck in hickville where all there is, is 91-93 octane. ;)

How do you get 110 so cheap?!! 100 octane here is like 3.59 a gallon and not too easy to come by. Do you mix it yourself?

Actually there are several gas station in the Twin City that have 110oct Right at the pump. As you can tell there is quite a street car presence in this area. Most Domestics can't run anything but race gas. due to the compression ratio they run

honestly even with my big 16g I dont remeber the last time I was in a serious race that I started out below 4k rpms.. no mater what speed your driving you can always down shift to get it above 5k. I am getting the SCM-61 pretty soon and installing HKS 272/272 and crower springs/retainers at the same time. but my power goals are upper 500 hp range.

my motor as it sits:
90 6 bolt block
.020 over wiesco 9.0:1 pistons
eagle H-beam rods
arp rod bolts, head studs, main studs
Balance shafts removed
Metal head gasket
balanced rotating assembly including flywheel and pressure plate!
denso 720cc injectors
walbro 255
6-an SS fuel lines

Is this the Mr2 Owners board? That's the only board I've ever seen soo many people cry about spool.

FYI, I run a PT67 P-trim, and am seeing full boost on my 2.0 by 4800-5000. The SC series turbo does not spool very well for it's size, nor have I seen any dyno numbers to prove it makes a lot of power either. What I have seen is a lot of people blowing them up. If you're buying a new turbo and want bolt-on, get a 3065 or a 3052, or a properly sized t3/t4.

Remember, it's not the size of the turbo. TUNING is a MAJOR factor in spoolup. Also, learn to drive. Downshift, and your lag disappears ;)

I agree on the tuning part. But how do you downshift from 1st gear?

If you're launching in 1st, and your revs drop below boost, then back to the "learning to drive" part.

Hmm I've had several DSM folks/customers using SC61's and none have had problems. Some are making pretty good power #'s and haven't heard a complaint about lag from them. Heck their is a LT1 F-body running a pair of twin SC61's. Car is making right around 900rwhp at only 17-18psi. The turbos are plenty capable.

I've had no problems at all to date. Lag is there though. Hell, my new tag reiterates just that...GOTLAG. :) There's no way around it w/o nitrous or a stroked motor. Full boost for me is just above 4k. And when it hits, it HITS. The turbo has the ability to make gobs of power. Chris made 482whp at 27psi in this car. And that was getting out of it at approx. 7500rpm. The car spins 9k all day long and pulls harder and harder the higher it revs (this is shown on the dyno sheet...car was still building power when he got out of it). It's insane.

Wanted to give an update on some locals here in MN.

Andy Nash - Stock 6bolt with 2G pistons (1g AWD) - Standard Mitsu style SCM 61 .63a/r - 531whp@35psi C16 race gas, 408whp 92oct, 25psi

John Lacroix - Eagle/Wiseco - 6 bolt - 1G AWD) - T3/T4 .82a/r 60trim - 516whp@35psi, C16, 416whp 92 oct, 25psi

Moe Kahn - Built 2.4 - 1G AWD -T3/T4 T04S PTE GT3561 .63a/r - 532whp@30psi, C16

Myself - Stock 7 bolt - 2G AWD - T3/T4 T04S PTE GT3561 .63 a/r - 403whp@22psi 92oct, 456.7@25psi, C16.

Justin Thompson - built 2.4 1G AWD - Standard Mitsu SCM61 .63 a/r with T04S cover - at around 16psi made 356whp on 92 oct (but blew the head gasket once it reached 6,000rpms when the boost shot to 28psi... not sure why?)

Honestly I got to ride in Andy Nash's 1G AWD - with the stock 6 bolt motor, Stock 2G Exhaust manifold(ported), and the Standard SCM61 on pump gas last week for the first time.

And his boost response is Instant, especially when compared to my car. My car doesn't get going till about 4700rpms - he get's full spool at about 4200rpms. I was extremely surprised - it had quicker spool up then my HRCS20G at the same RPMs.

Also got some info on Justin's 2.4L - he's seeing boost starting at 3200rpms, full spool by 3800rpms. SCM61 with T04S cover. That's on the verge of 16G spoolup.

IMO - Large turbos are definetely more streetable then they've been made out to be.

After riding in Andy's car I wouldn't recommend a 50trim over a SCM61 ever again. Spool ups are almost identical. and the SCM61 will make more power.

when you guys say "turboA" hits full boost at XXXXrpm .. what gear is that in? Obviously the higher the gear the sooner it will spool as far as the rpms go. My scm61 hits 23 psi by around 4300rpm or so in 4th gear ... but in second it won't hit that much boost until over 5000 rpm.

I'm making 15lbs by 4700 in second gear.. and that's on a 2.0 with head work, 272 cams, intake manifold, and a PT-67 P-trim :D

yea mine makes 15 lbs around 4600 in 2nd I think, but still I was confused because when a company tells you at what rpm the turbo should reach say 20 psi ... is that assuming 4th gear?

Holy shit! You're only making a bar at 4600? I originally bought a SCM61, then sold it in favor of my PT-67, damn glad I did if that's all the better you're spooling. I'm spooling damn near the same as you on a full t4!

Well Andy's SCM61 - Ported head, 272, and SMI - from 55mph roll in 3rd gear at 4200rpms spooled instantly.

Doing a 4th gear pull on the dyno starting at a lower RPM would yeild a better - lbs/min then starting at a higher RPM and going WOT.

At least with my turbo - if I start at 2000rpms and go WOT - by the time I hit 8,000rpms I'm seeing 52lbs/min

If I start at 4,000rpms and go WOT by the time I hit 8,000rpms I'm only seeing 48lbs/min

spool up is about the same - but actual Flow is different even though the PSI might read the same.

Yes in 2nd gear I am. I'll pay closer attention to it tonight if I take the car out. In 4th gear I hit 23 psi by 4300.

What kind of engine management and tuning have you done? What supporting mods?

my main problem right now is I am using an safc .. I just installed my 1995 eprom ecu to run dsmlink, however I don't have the dsmlink in yet. I'm using 780 injectors so my safc is at like -48 and even -49 at 5-7k in the high settings. I'm just using a datalogger and safc for now though ... boost is set at 1.65 bar right now.

Well it may be just me but why are we even looking at big turbos on pump gas? I dont even know guys with 14bs around here running that, then again the local gas station is open 24 hours a day and sells 110 for 3.75 why buy anything else. When you buy a BIG turbo you are not or should not be buying it to run on pump gas. The 2 cars we have now one built with a gt35R running 11.0@132 that is street drivin never sees pump. ANd niether will my car when its done. Pump gas is for small turbos

Well, for one a larger turbo will make more horsepower per pound of boost, so it will make more peak horsepower on pump gas. That's one thing that people are looking for. Another thing is that people like to go to the grocery store, pick their kid up from school, or just take a cruise around town in their fast car once in a while, and don't like burning 5 dollar a gallon gas. I'm running a PT67, and 80 percent of the time it's seeing lower boost and pump gas because I put a lot of miles on the car. Pump gas is for people with real street cars.

Also, about the lag issue I don't find it bad at all with my big turbo. When i'm cruising around town I don't need boost anyways, but if I want to get on it I have boost quick enough to handle anything on the street. Coming home from work yesterday I raced a coworker, he's running an EvoIII 16G and he kept telling me about how badly hes gonna roll me cause I have so much lag from my PT67. Guess what happened? Launched off the 2-step with boost, we were even through first gear only because I was spinning hard, and once I shifted to second I promptly put buslengths on him. I am, however, building a 2.3L stroker as we speak so that I can make even more power on pump gas.

I was running 22-23 psi on 91 octane daily. Got that amount of # by around 42-4300RPM
It had a bad ass top end. Was very fun in the GST w/ it taller gears. Very efficant turbo, was also getting 28-30 MPG on the highways and aroundf 26MPG on the streets :thumb:

This turbo is horrible!!! They claim 660 hp and full boost around 4300 ... and it does just that and it also keeps breaking my transmission. I hate this turbo it broke my 4th gear again!!! ;)

Some quick questions for you.

You stated that "After riding in Andy's car I wouldn't recommend a 50trim over a SCM61 ever again. Spool ups are almost identical. and the SCM61 will make more power.
"

Spools up almost identical but not the same. So how much identical are they? (people claimed 50trim spools 3800-4000, scm61 4300-4700rpm). On the street, is the lag that bad with the scm61?

What kind of piggyback Andy currently using to tune his car with?

Do you know anyone with scm61 running on their 1G and tune 2G mas + AFC?

Any more info would be great! :thumb:
