True .. or you could just turn the boost down. Then when you go to the track and/or other racing events then you run it on race gas. Doesn't seem like theres any point in having 500 whp on the way to school. :cool:

you said it yourself, most people dont have race gas at their disposal. not to mention the economy of race gas or lack there off. plus pump has a certain prestige in my opinion. making power and building a efficient performance car that kicks ass on pump is pretty bad ass. :thumb:
 
I don't see this thread really providing much helpful information to anyone looking for either turbo. Both turbo's work and both and plenty streetable even on stock motors. We dyno'd 2 of our own shop cars this weekend as well as put them on the track.

Dyno: 415hp/28 psi 110 octane

those are some really nice numbers. to help others that may not be all that familiar with these turbos can you list the graph for the 61 Dyno or just list when your power was coming in and where it peaked. that would be a great example for the people with these questions to see when it comes in and when it really shines.

Are you kidding? Just knowing it's there is an Awsome feeling. Everytime I blip the gas on my way into work it give me a smile.

I'm just saying run a few psi less on the street .. then when you have high octane then really crank it up. Not saying to run like 10 psi or anything ...
 
i have the sc61 on a stock 7 bolt, and i have no issues with it. I just don't understand when people say that turbo is just too big, or it has too much lag, or whatever it is, when they've never even tried or attempt anything bigger then a 16g or 20g. yes there is noticable lag big deal, if you want to make big power your always gonna have issues with something, i'm not saying go ahead and buy this turbo and put it on a stock motor, but if you have a good head, cams, smim, and some good tuning you'll easily be able to make 400whp on pump on a stock 6, 7bolt. My car is daily driven, on pump gas, and it's just perfect.
 
I think all the talk about big turbo's not being streetable,etc. Is based on the old train of thought. It wasn't but a few years ago Most people thought you couldn't go above 17psi on Pump gas. Let alone more then 20psi on Race gas.


In time with more testing I'm sure the dsm community will figure out how to manage running larger turbo's.

Am I correct in thinking that the PTE SCM 61 uses the Garrett 60-1 compressor? If so how in the world does anyone get away with running 30psi even on race gass??? Read the maps, this compressor certainly flows a lot, but over 20psi it's efficiency drops through the floor. I realize that it is often made to run over that, but at 30 psi it's doing more heating than compressing. If that second car were to run 22-23 psi (instead of 30) and 9000-9500rpms the turbo would certainly be a lot happier, and he would probably make more power. At what rpm did the 530hp show up?? Just curious.
 
It's more efficiant then the 60-1.

I guess my only response to what you said is, you can't always judge based off compressor maps?
For me I just go by real world experience's with everything I choice/do. But that's just me.

Like my friend running 35psi on a 60trim - 526whp on C-16. Everyone was probably thinking he was on crack or something. But he did 8 pulls on the dyno (zero problems) - drove it for a week (it's his Daily driver) then took it to the track. Made I think 6 pass's when he broke a shift fork. Later that week he re-did the tranny and has been driving it ever since.

SO does a 62-1 but both turbos do perform. Its true the turbo was designed to run supposedly for less boos but it does work. A lot of people have also said turbonetics lied about the map for the wheel. It has proven it self more than once at 30psi. One of the guys who lives here use to run one on his car befor he got a gt35r and always ran it at 28 psi. It too performed very well while he had it.

Geez, throw some 272s in that scm 50 car and go get a 10sec timeslip! With a set fo cams and smim you would have a nice 500+whp dyno run for a stock long block!

The sc61 uses the gt40 56 trim compressor whell that is rated at 65 lb/min. It is very efficient. Also, everyone I have ever talked to said the 60-1 map is wrong. I have seen 30 psi out of those as well (and crazy power numbers).
 
Ok, I did some research and got the scoop. For some reason I thought I heard this was a 60-1. It obviously isn't. Oh well. Are you sure this compressor is from a GT40 though? I don't believe Garrett makes a 56 trim compressor for the GT40, they do for the GT35R and the GT42. GT40's come in your choice of 50 or 54 trim. I noticed Precision specs the scm61 as a 56 trim but it doesn't say anything about where it comes from, how it flows resembles the 35R, but who knows.

Your right of course, maps aren't everything. The surge line is important to consider, but the top and right sides quit telling the story a little early. They end at a maximum shaft rpm determined by Garrett many moons ago, no one ever said you couldn't over spin it a bit though. For instance, check out the best 14b slips at dsmtimes.org. Those guys are more than just a little off the map.

Its still a safe bet that anyone running over 25psi on a 60-1 is doing some serious heating of the intake charge. They would be much better off at that point going to one of the bigger GT wheels, or even a T-61 if needed. My .02

The "GT40" compressor map is listed under gt35r in the garrett catelog. PTE used to have a link to the compressor map used in the sc61. I have it here:

You can get the gt40 compressor wheel in a variety of combinations of turbine wheels and center sections. The gt35r assembly in the catelog is a gt40 compressor with a gt35 turbine wheel in a ball bearing CHRA.

I have no idea where GT40 came from, and have no idea if that is te correct name, but that's what they wheel is most commonly refered to.

There's also a real 60-1 compressor map floating around on the net. Looks similar to the sc61 map I posted above. Kind of hard to read, so I have no idea how similar it is to the old Turbonetics map.
 
I have the PTE SCM61. Garret GT40 compressor wheel/t350 turbine wheel. Look under username turbotalon92 in the gallery. One of the pics has a complete mods list for the car. Yes, I am now the very proud new owner of this beautiful, sick! monster :thumb: I can tell you that just in the last week that I've owned it it is a WORLD of difference. It's like learning to drive all over again. Not just b/c it's FWD, but b/c of the power. What I've seen thus far is that FULL boost does not come on till about 4300-4500 rpm. But when it does, holy shi#!! Even at 15lbs. this thing is just crazy. 1st, 2nd, forget about it. 3rd grips but torque steer...damn! Now I'm no expert on this car yet. I'm still learning on it as I go. I just couldn't pass it up for the $$$. I've been looking for another DSM for about the last 2 months. I've been out of the game for about a yr. and a half. And let me say, it's REAL nice to be back. :D
 
The GT40 compressor wheel is the same wheel used in the gt35R (56 trim) a gt 35r is actually a gt3540. It is the same compressor wheel used in fp3065 sc61 and many other hybrid turbos.

Cost of gas. Personally, I don't mind paying $3/gal for 110 octane to be run daily which I will be doing especially with these high gas prices. But tuning for 92 octane doesnt hurt either if it realy is your daily driver and you get stuck in hickville where all there is, is 91-93 octane. ;)

He posted that it has 272's. - and most of the SLS boys run Some sort of Sheet Metal Intake manifold. So there might be one on it already.

Brian, kevin doesnt have 272s or a sheetmetal.

The 61mm hybrids or the GT35R itself has proved itself on many cars, fully built or mildly built; It's just a matter of what you consider "too laggy" for yourself. Like I said, lag is overrated. Lag for daily driving is just a way to save gas :D
