My power steering is whining very badly. It groans whenever I turn the wheel. I have tried belt dressing and PS fluid but it is definitely the pump that is on its way out.

I have driven the car this way for 900 miles. It has gotten a bit worse along the way. What would happen if the pump would seize up while driving? Will it cause the water pump, etc. to stop or would the PS pulley just spin freely and I would lose power steering? I will get it fixed but it may be another week or two.

Thank you, I appreciate the help.

Best case scenario, the pulley freezes.
Also possible, and it happened to me in my Jeep, the pulley shoots out the front of the pump, with some internal parts and fluid, destroying whatever it touches.

Oh wow, I better get this done soon.

I want to do it myself but I'll have to research how hard it will be. I don't have a floor jack even where I am living right now.

I shut the car off while I coasted to a thirty foot stop. I got out to see a trail of PS fluid. It appears to have leaked from the cap and down the reservoir. The cap was on tight. Is it safe to drive?

Oh, and the trail began at the same place I shut the car off.

Figured it out. I turned the wheel where it started leaking and it just purged out the top of the cap. I'm not sure why it does it but apparently it does!

Replace it and try not driving it untill you can.. I just removed my power steering setup completely because it wouldn't stop leaking in like three spots.. Its a little hard to turn when just sitting but its not bad.. And my engine bay looks WAY cleaner.. If you can live without out power steering pull it LOL if not replace the unit.. Driving it like that COULD cause it too seize taking the belts with it and yes it could take the water pump belt too it happened on my buddies 2g..

It sounds to me like you have a blockage in a line somewhere or possibly a bad pressure relief in the pump, if it's building enough pressure to back up through the reservoir and pour out the top like that.

Changing the pump out is easy. Rebuilding them isn't much harder: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/art...4-how-rebuild-modify-power-steering-pump.html

Please fill out your profile so we know what type of car (and any mods) that you have.

Thank you, I appreciate your help. I filled out my profile a little better.

Two questions: 1) is the pump the same for both turbo/non turbo?
2) Do I need a belt puller?
3) Can I do this without jacking up the car? (I am staying with a cousin for the summer and I don't have much for tools here.

Thank you

No. 2g nt and 2gturbo dsms dont have the same power streering pump.. Why not just remove it though? I had a perfectly functioning one and i removed it 1. Because it would clean the engine bay up a lot! More and 2. So that in the future the possiblity of a bad power streering pump woundnt be there... Because there is no ps.
I vote remove it all together!!! :D

You were right. There was a blockage in a line so after replacing the lines and reservoir, it works great! Thanks! :thumb:
