Power starter

How do I power the starter when its disconnected and out of a car? I have another car to "boost it", but theres 3 connections on the starter and I duno what does what. Please help

I *know* there's a picture of it in my Chiltons. One will be the ground, another will cause the starter to spin, and another will cause it to extend. When testing though, make sure you don't leave it hooked up very long. There's a reason why you don't crank the starter over for long periods of time.

One battery jumper cable from battery negative to starter casing. Another battery jumper cable from battery positive to the large stud on starter solenoid (magnetic switch attached to starter) where the original large (4 gauge) battery positive cable went. Then touch a wire from the solenoid terminal where the smaller harness wire went (key start signal) to the battery positive cable.
