I know the 1st response is going to be search, well I have went through 50 threads, and everyone has either pulled the tranny with the engine which I don't want to do, or they have pulled the head, and just removed the block which I have done before.

My question is can I pull the block and the head together if I remove, intake and exhaust manifolds, crank, water pump pulleys, etc. Will I be able to pull it with a cherry picker because I am just selling the engine, and wanted to leave the rest of it together. Also, it is going to be parked outside all winter so I didn't want to pull the x-case, and the axles leaving everything exposed to the weather.

I dont think it is possible to do because you would have to move the motor to the drivers side enough to clear the input shaft on the tranny. If you remove all of the pulleys and accessories on the front of the motor you may have enough room but it is iffy.Basically you need probably 4 inches of space to clear you clutch assembly. Sorry Travis

Its incredibly difficult to do on the 1g's without moving the tranny. I thought that removin all of the accessories and pulleys would help but it is alot easier if you pull the tranny out with it, unless of course you have ABS still which is still a pain in the rear to get around.

Is there any reason you would want to leave it in? Pop the axels, unhook the ground strap, sensor and speedo cable, clutch line, Shitf linkage (providing its a 5spd) Off with the motor mount and your done. (pretty sure I hit everything)

like shaun said, just take the whole thing out. it will save you time in the long run. if its that hard to take out imagine putting back in when you have to line up the input shaft and turn the cv shafts to pop it in the engine in that small a space.

Like I said above the only reason I don't want to pull the tranny is because the car is going to set in the winter weather and if i pull the axles and transfer case the weather is really going to work on those opening in the tranny, other than that there is no other reason. I guess i will just pull it all.

thanks for all the replies!

Stuff towls in all the openings and leave both tranny and TC in the trunk or in the house, you're just being lazy. :p

you're just being lazy.

LOL, yea do like he said just dont leave it outside. Knew a guy who had a fully build stroker and his motor caught fire. He melted the whole top of the head, the thermostat housing was melted to a puddle of metal. Well he then took the head off and left the short block outside in the weather and never covered anything up. He ruined the 2k motor.

I pulled it all. It worked great, but this quote above is 1 of the reasons I am glad I am parting my car out. There is nothing LAZY about it, I was just trying to see if I could save myself some time because I don't have very much spare time.

On my 2g I never pull the trans. I take all the tranny mounts loose so it can move a little. Leave the axles and everything else hooked up. Take all the pullys off of the front of the motor, and I mean all of them, remove the oil pressure sending unit(i've broke 2 of these:cry: ) That will bareley give you enough room to seperate the two. then pull the motor out. I dont even take the turbo off much less the intake manifold. Just watch the starter and the ac compressor. People told me I was crazy to do it this way, but I just didnt want to mess with the clutch lines and axels and stuff. The first time I did it, it took about 5-6 hours. Now I can have the motor on the ground in less that 2.(with air tools) And when I put it back in I dont have to do any thing to bleed the clutch reattach shift cables or any thing with the trans. But to each his own. But remember this is a 2g I have not had to pull the motor out of my 1g yet.(Knock on wood)
