Just picked up a 95 GST and sometimes when I press the accelerator, 5th gear gets pushed out of gear. With your hand on the shifter, you can feel the force. On the gas it pushes the shifter towards the rear of the car, and off the gas the shifter goes forward. What is this or what is it related to? It doesnt always pop out of gear, but you can always feel that force on it.

If your car is in gear and you let off the throttle and then get back on it slightly, does the shifter move in and out in all gears or just 5th? I had the same issue with all gears except mine liked to "pop" out of 2nd. The issue with mine was the 2 big 36mm nuts were loose in the tranny.

Stop driving it.

Take off the end case of the transmission and tighten up those huge nuts. Your tranny CAN be saved. Before too long, 5th gear will try to force itself right out of the transmission and all over the highway. It takes under an hour to do this job.

I had this happen to me. While I was driving home, it popped out 2 or 3 times, then exploded all over my brakes and I couldn't stop. I got stuck in 5th gear for over an hour, I couldn't yank it out. Luckily, the Incredible Hulk was walking by and I asked him to yank my shifter because it was stuck, he did, and I could drive home in the first 4 gears, but the tranny ended up being junk by the time I got home.
