Hey guys,

I bought my Automatic 98 Eclipse GS with 111,xxx miles in April of this year. Since buying it, I've noticed that the gas mileage hasn't been that great so I've been combing the forums for ideas on what to do to combat this issue. Right now I'm only averaging 22mpg. On another post with someone asking about this, I've seen someone saying that that was about right. I feel that this small 4 cylinder car should be getting better numbers than that, though.
Here's a list of replaced parts since owning it:
Tires
Downstream O2 Sensor
Fuel Filter
CAI
Ignition Coil
NGK Spark Plugs
Regular Oil Changes with filters
Alternator
Tensioner Pully
Water Pump
Timing Belt
Cylinder Heads
Head Gasket
Main Bearings
Piston Rings

Also, I've burped the radiator because I read on the forums that the engines run different when there's air in the coolant.

Is there anything that I'm overlooking?
I have an upstream O2 sensor waiting to get put on, but my engine isn't throwing any codes. The CEL was on when my downstream O2 sensor was bad and when I replaced it, it hasn't been back since.

Is there anything maintenance-wise that I could do to help me improve my gas mileage?

Sincerely,
-College Kid on a Budget

22mpg in typical stop and go is pretty good for that car. I bet you get 26 or 28 on the hwy??

I drive a pretty good mix of highway/city. Most of my driving is on the highway and where I live it's all 55MPH roads where I set my cruise at 60 and go. Am I just overthinking what I should be getting? :aha:

yeah 22 is pretty good for the car! on a highway run ive got up to 35 before but i was cruising at about 55 mph but normally i get around 23-25 mpg

Any ideas on mods to improve this number besides driving like a granny
Lose about a third ton from that chassis that weighs close to 2800 lbs and put in a smaller motor...or, trade/sell that thing in for a Honda FIT that gets well over 40mpg.

Combined city/hgwy with that 420A under the hood and getting 22-26mpg is as close as you can get. I get 22-27 combined with my Laser and can't expect any more with what I have..

..and Automatics mated with any four cylinder motors, esp the older ones, was not a good marriage to have in any hefty chassis.
