Hey guys, I have researched pretty extensively my issue to try to find someone else in the same boat to answer my question but have had no luck. If it has been asked before tho, I apologize and if you have it feel free to give me the thread link. Here goes...I just bought a 95 gsx with 190k on it. It runs I guess you would say reliable right now, I drive it easy, but would like to rebuild it to give me a solid platform to put some modifications on it next summer. I have never rebuilt an engine and this will really be my first experience of extensive under the hood work but I want this to be a learning experience for me. I have a uncle who is going to help me out with the process so we can hopefully handle this ourselves as much as possible. My question is, is there a "path" of a rebuild? Like down to very basic instructions more or less? Secondly, what all should be done in a rebuild? What parts should be replaced? I know this kind of factors in so my goal for hp is 325-350 as a DD. As I said I am a pretty dumb noob and am just looking for as much advice and tips as I can get my hands on. Thank you guys very much in advance. Budget is going to be a bit of an issue, I have heard of "rebuild kits" is this recommended. As I said as much extensive advice as I can get is GREATLY appreciated. Thank you!

That is a great set of questions. With that HP goal it will be easy fro you to achieve that while sticking to any budget you may have. That goal can be achieved by first off doing general maintenance to the car. Replace all of the gaskets, belts, fluids. Check the pistons and rods for wear. You may just want to replace them, if you plan on trying to hit higher HP #'s down the road. After the maintenance item have been addressed, bolt-ons will get you to your goal. Mitsubishi Turbo Performance Parts from Mach V Motorsports has a GREAT "Performance Guide" which outlines the bolt ons needed to achieve what they call 2 stages. Their stage 1 recommendations will get you around 300hp, and their stage 2 reccomendations will help you get to 375hp. Hopefully that site will help. Good luck with the build, and keep us updated.

well ok It's not hard to get that kinda power out of a 4g63t.
I would go 550cc or660cc injectors,Safc-2,maf-t,1g rod's,2g pistons,16g trubo,fmic,255 fuel pump,Afpr, ARP head, main, and,rod bolts,wideband,boost gauge,with a good tune you should reach that goal.
As for the rebuild any time you do a rebuild. It would be best if you get good bearing's like not Acl's I would get Clevite 77,a good head gasket (Cometic Metal Head Gasket). and since your they some good piston ring's (Wiseco Piston Rings). those are the main thing's really but at the same time you should check all hose's when the motor is out replace if any are in bad or look like you will need to replace soon. as for the other gastket's and part's got to these site their cheap, but not bad part never had any problem's with get part's on time or bad any anyway.

I highly suggest swapping in a 6 bolt. Itll help you in the long run, and will be easier to swap rather than pull, rebuild (while i cant drive my car and im getting frustrated and want this rebuild done, so i cut corners and boom), reinstall and BOOM....

2x the 6 bolt swap.
I also am willing to bet you can put down 300 without changing injectors or adding tuning at this point. AFPR, fuel pump rewire, ARP hardware is a must, scrap the t-25 for at least a 14b(cheap) or 16g as someone else suggested, boost gauge/mbc, cone filter and hard i/c piping, get a custom bent 3in exhaust dp back and you'll be at the edge of 300 without spending 6-800 on fuel management/injectors.

thank you guys very much thus far, you have been alot of help but I still have questions about the beginning of rebuild...or maybe a 6 bolt swap is better? I really cant see myself ever pursuing hp above 350-375 if that matters. Either way what are the beginning steps of the rebuild or the 6 bolt swap?

A REALLY good idea is to buy a HAYNES Repair Manual. ALOT on what to do and stuff..... The best I've EVER seen....

I would have to say that the Haynes manual is very much incomplete as far as engine specifics. They add steps that are useless (taking the crank sprocket off for a timing belt swap?!?) and are missing key pointers that I didn't know about until I was lacking (which way to turn the tensioner pulley in order to add the right tension).

I haven't yet made the purchase, but everyone I know that is serious about rebuilding the engine goes with the OEM service manual. This is the Bible for everything you need to do.

As far as swapping out engines, I would stick with the 7 bolt. Check your crankshaft to make sure its within tolerances, and go from there. Everyone trashes them, but there are people making decent power out of stock 7 bolts with no issues. It's your first time rebuilding anything, and you will have alot more sense of accomplishment from doing the work yourself, rather than buying a crate engine (if you go 6 bolt) and installing it. You will also quite literally have plenty of blood and sweat put into your engine at the end of the build :thumb:

I'm not trying to sound like I have done all sorts of engine work, because I have just done a head gasket / head stud swap. Even so, I learned alot (you get to see all the working parts) and at the end of the day you know EXACTLY what went into your car.

Word of advice, never order ANYTHING until you have the motor apart and the machine shop says how much you would need to bore the bottom end. Will keep the headaches away and your wallet feeling less empty.

the first thing you need is a NOTEBOOK!! for notes and info, the 2nd thing you need to do is research, wich your doing. the 3rd is what your budget is. and 4th is what your goals are.

you doing good with the questions, and we know what your goal is, 300-350 hp.

Boost Frenzy is correct, do not order bearings or pistons/rings till you find out what over or undersizes you need due to machine work.
But if you find the deal on your gaskets, timing componets, head studs, water pump, and the other basic parts. You can get those.

so you have a understanding of machine work, read this, It was written by DSMT Wise man Big Woo

then research! Reaserch! research!
