hey everyone, i know there are already a million threads relating to this same thing but none of them that i've read have been the same symptoms or the same motor or anything as mine. anyways, my car is really acting up. its running really rich at idle, but it always has and i just figured it was because it has different cams in it, and there are no codes thrown. but i'm not sure if that is my problem. anyways, when the car is idling, you can smell gas really strong, and when you are driving the car, the car runs fine if you only bearly crack the throttle. if you are getting on it, you have to ease into the throttle more and more and then once its above 3k rpm it really doesnt matter, but before then if you just punch it it spits and misses and backfires. could this just be because of my cams? or do i potentially have a bigger problem? please help me. and i apologize if this thread is hard to read or anything because i havent slept in almost two days now

....There could be a number of things that could be causing this!!
But as for cams... I, personally would run that out!

You said it runs rich at idle? you know this for a fact?
Well if it is running rich you must figure that out and why its running rich, and that could possible lead you on to the issue!
Check the plugs and wires to make sure everything is firing well!
make sure the timing is all good too.
And a Boost Leak test!!!
and also Do a compression check! If its been running rich for a while its possible the excess gas not getting burnt could have possible deteriorated your rings!

Had a problem like this with my old cadillac eldorado, an injector got stuck open and flooded a cylinder... fixed all that and never ran the same found out that one cylinder had bad compression cause the rings went bad due to the flooding of gas!

JUST my opinion tho!

Good luck with it man!!

Hey thanks man the plugs are new but the wires aren't as new and neither is the coil, but I didn't even really think about either because it runs fine higher up in the rpm's but I guess I can't just make that assumption. And I did check the compression and all cylinders are sitting right at 190psi. What had me stumped was that there are no codes except the intake air temp sensor which is broken off but from what I've read it does very little if anything. Wow, maybe that's my problem?

okay, so my car is smoking pretty bad at idle, and its white smoke. it doesnt smell like oil it just smells like its running rich. and i checked the oil for antifreeze and the antifreeze to see if it looked like there was any oil and there wasnt, so i dont think it would be the head gasket but if anybody thinks it could be please tell me. i know there is a vaccuum line that goes from the intake manifold to the brake booster that is cracked and starting to leak but i dont think that could cause it either. if there is anybody near marysville ohio that knows their stuff about the n/t cars please let me know. i just cant figure it out
