I have a 98 gs-t. I need to replace the timing belt on my car right now. I bought the car at like 62500 miles and its now at 66689 exactly- i dont think the previous owner replaced it, so i want to. I have the timing belt already, but i was told it would cost $700 to get it put in. I know my car pretty well, so my questions are:

-Can i replace it myself(with directions)?
-If i can- does anyone know where i can get info on how to do it?
My friend has a timing gun, so i can use that.
-How much would it cost to have a mechanic do it?

I would REALLY appreciate the feedback cause i drive it now, and every little noise i hear, i think my engine is about to blow..and i cant race

Thanx a lot- you will save me from looking like this   :barf: when my car blows up..

You should be able to do it yourself if you know how to follow directions. You're not gonna need a timing light, or atleast I wouldn't know why you would need one. You're not changing the timing at all. Directions can be found at vfaq.com. And don't forget your gonna need new accesory belts too.

What do u mean by "im not going to need a timing belt" the manual and everyone says to change the belt at 60,000--what r u accesory belts? are those "put-on-able" for a guy in a garage at home? thanx :dsm:

He said you wont need a timing light.. not belt. But yea to answer your question, you can do it yourself. Just take your time and get the timing marks right...

The accesory belts are the ones that drive the power steering pump and all that stuff. They are in front of the timing belt, so you have to take them off to get to the timing belt. Might as well put new ones on while you got the chance, right?

i recommend changing all the belts, pulleys, and the water pump replaced all at once while you are at it. If you don't know what accessory belts are, you should take it to a dealer and have them replace it for you. DO NOT take it to any mechanic, they will waste your time and money. The dealer should charge you around $300 labor for the timing belt if you bring the parts in youself.

From the way you sound i don't think you should do it. I think i have a pretty good grasp on mechanics but i won't do mine or anyone elses. Take it to the dealer.

A local dealer put a timing belt on for my buddy. The mechanic put the exhaust cam in 180 degrees out of phase. OMG Say hi to satin for me.

DAMN $700 for a timing job, i got the timing done on my talon and everything that was wrong on my probe fixed for $720. and that was alot LOL plugs, wires, oil change, front cv joint, a ball joint and tie rod, rear brakes, exhaust, and the turbo was ####ed up somehow. damn you need to find a cheaper place.
