Hello I really need some help. I do have a Mitsubishi eclipse 97 GS I love my car and I put new 18 inch rims (I had 16) and very nice Pirelli tires. It looks very good but its not driving as good as it was I mean it’s not shifting gear so good. Car goes to high RPS always cuz wheels are bigger now. I’m afraid my transmission will not last. Should I be worried ? And if so what can I do to prevent it?????? One guy told me get a computer ship so u can adjust wheel size. Is that true? What’s the name of it and how much is it ? Where to get it ? plz help

I do not know about this specific car. But when you get larger tires you should have your computer re programed to the fuel and all that shit . And your trans should be fixed. You need to re program ur pcm or ecu.....

From what people have told me, putting bigger rims and tires on your car will only throw off the speedo alittle, it shouldnt hurt your trans. Also if you have bigger rims just get yourself some low profiles to match the stock revolution.

Speedometer will be not calibrated if you swapped wheel & tire combo with a different rolling diameter than the original.

Other than that, youre fine.

Weigh your new wheels and tire and compare them to the old combo. What you are feeling is the increased rotational mass imposed by the new wheels on the engine. If you have a heavier set, the car will feel sluggish.

RIM size only affects your speedometer...I don't understand your question about it not shifting so good? Do you mean grinding, slipping or what? It could be your clutch.

Well all I know it happened after I got new rims. They are way bigger and heavier than the old. So this is what’s wrong - normally when we drive, car goes to some point of RPM and it makes a shift so normally we don’t even feel it. But in my case RPM go high and I feel that car is not driving smooth.(before shifts it goes to high RPM). Its very nice when I want to race but its not fun driving to the store for milk car is in race mode all the time. (I have auto trans) and yes car is driving little slower (I think so)
So what about that re program computers like STERLINGS said in second message ??????????????????????

Next time some of you people post, read the rules right above where you type your reply and you'll see this:

Look changing the size of your rims shouldn't affect anything but your acceleration, braking, and handling. It will only slightly affect those due to your larger rims weighing more than your stock wheels most likely. Now if you had ordered a proper sized tire to match your new wheels then you'd have nothing to worry about. Since you went with 18's I'm going to assume they most likely sent you 215/40-18's. If so your tires will be a little taller than before meaning that when your speedo says 60mph you may in fact be doing 62mph. Simply changing out your wheels should have no effect on how your transmission shifts unless you ordered the wrong sized tires or went with extremely heavy chrome wheels at which point your nt may downshift more often since the heavier wheels will make it harder to accelerate and maintain a constant speed.

Let us know what tire size you have with them and what transmission you have (automatic or manual) and we'll be able to help you more. Well I had 205/55/16 and now 225/40/18 new tires are like inch bigger. They are heavier but I’m not sure how much. Ok so this is what im thinking – IF I’m the only one having this problem (and a lot of people have bigger aftermarket tires) and nobody knows my problem than maybe that problem is not because of my new rims. (Although it happens the same day when I put new rims)
