Please help!! Buying 92 talon tsi, no tranny, couple ?'s

Hi all!! I'm new to DSM's and have a couple questions. I'm buying a 92 Eagle Talon TSI with no tranny and 77,000 miles on motor. The car also needs a radiator, and the door handles need to be fixed on both sides. Driver's side handle doesn't open the door, pass side door handle is broken off. The body and interior are both in decsent condition. I don't know how long it has been sitting without the tranny but apparently the previous owner took out the bad tranny, gave to someone to fixed, the guy took the tranny and didn't come back. The owner gave the car up a month or two later. Everything is there to put the car back together except the radiator, and tranny. I plan to use the car as my daily driver/project car as I will be attending Automotive Training Center in the upcoming weeks. I just want to get the car running good before I start modding. Hopefully the motor will turn over and nothing is wrong with it. Now my couple ?'s.

Does $850 sound like a fair deal?
What should I do or check when I get the car?
What should I check when I source a tranny and start putting back together?

Sorry for the long message, and I hope to have pics up soon. Please help a newbie out.

No, I wouldn't pay anywhere near that. You don't even know if the engine is okay.
The first thing I would do is check the turbo for shaft play. That might give you an idea of how the car was treated. I'm tired and I'll let someone else list the 100 other things you should check.

Is it an auto or a manual?

If you have confidence in your mechanical ability, the only thing i would worry about is getting a decent trans. If you plan to build up the motor and make some serious power, I suggest buying a used 5spd tranny for cheap and send it out to ShepRacing (shepracing.com)to get it rebuilt for $895. It very well could save you a lot in the long run if you plan to mod your car.

I have a few ?'s:
1. 6 or 7 bolt motor?
2. Have you checked the motor to see if it runs OK? you should be able to w/o tranny hooked up.
3. Is it AWD?

If motor does not run well/ turn over, offer him less, if it is AWD, make sure all the components are there, i.e. transfer case, rear end, driveshafts, and check for leaky transfer case

He said there wasn't a radiator. You could run it like that, but I wouldn't want to spin the water pump dry. I'm assuming there is no coolant in it, of course.

You could probably get away with running it very briefly. It might need a jump. If it's been sitting for a while, there's probably no charge in the battery.

Thanks guys for your help so far. The car is awd and it is a 5 speed. As far as I know everything is there to put it back together except the rad and tranny. My main objective right now is to get it running and then once it's running good, time to start working towards stage 1 mods. Can I check turbo shaft play with it on the motor, or do I have to remove it to check it?? Also, would I be able to turn the motor with the flywheel instead, just to see if it will turn over?? I think that's it for now, got to go to work. Thanks for the help guys. Keep the posts coming.
