I have a 1991 eclipse gsx. Of course its a manual and fun to drive. But its a little difficult to have any touch with the gas because there is a good amount of play in the gas pedal. Its kinda annoying. Not sure why its there. Is it normal? The car is fairly new for me and is a work in progress.

Thanks

People about safety might not like it, but when the gas pedal has play, I just go to where the cable meets the pedal and use zipties as spacers. Don't see how anythign could go bad, unless you stomp on the gas pedal with 2 feet and snap them, then you just have the play again.

You might have slack in the cable, check if theirs any slack. You can tighten it to where there is no play in the line but be careful not to open the throttle at all in the process.

You need, at least, an 1/8" of slack in the cable for a safety buffer - kinda a requirement with all cable drawn throttles .. even with motorcycles.

If that throttle plate stuck on you and you have no slack, you got some serious control problems.

Then pull it out and put in a non cruise OEM cable. There are too many things that can go wrong with a non working cruise setup IMO. Just recently with mine my gas pedal got stuck at half throttle because of one of the coils in the cruise control getting stuck. Just pull it, it's a really easy job and you can get a cable on ExtremePSI for pretty cheap brand new. After pulling my cruise, I feel WAY more safe with my throttle only being the pedal/cable/throttle body. Less room for problems.

About your gas getting stuck. Sometimes after i drive my car, then let it sit, lets say like 6 hours, the gas is stuck. I have to press on it pretty hard to break it loose. Could that be the cruise control getting stuck like you said.

Could be the closed throttle stop is adjusted wrong (closes too much) and the plate is actually getting stuck closed when the aluminum body cools. You might want to open the plate just slightly, and readjust the idle with the BISS.

A dirty throttle body can cause the plate to stick open or closed. I found that out the hard way when I put a used TB on and the throttle stayed open on me. Take off the UICP and look in there. Play with the butterfly and see if thats what is causing the stick.

Holy slack. I've fixed it in other cars with the ziptie method, but I would suggest going with what the people above are suggesting. Can you confirm if your cruise was messed with / attempt to delete?

If your throttle sticks closed after the car sits for 6 hours, you should clean the throttle blade, and the bore of the throttle body. To do a really good job on this, you'll need to remove the TB elbow, and hold the blade fully open. Using a rag, a toddler toothbrush, and a can of Gumout spray, clean every side of the blade, and all the way around the bore where the edges of the throttle blade meet the bore. Be sure to get the edges of the throttle blade.

As for the freeplay, the only sure way to figure that out, is to look at everything. Check all the cables, have someone wiggle the pedal like you were in the video, while you look around under the hood and see what's moving.

Ps. Don't give the toothbrush back to your toddler.
