Just replaced a timing belt after engine sat for over a year. Got all the marks as close as i could then went to turn it and it got hard after about half a turn gave it just a tad more force and there was a large ping noise. I thought something snapped but i didnt turn it that hard. Now i cant get it to happen again it suddenly turns good without any noise or fus. Anyone have any idea what might have happened or if i should worry about it

You mean you rotated by hand, not by starter. If so, maybe you heard it from valve train components like lifters/rocker arms/valve springs.

I hate to say this...........I did the same thing before I knew anything about these engines. I too rotated my cams over by hand and heard a "PING". That ping was me bending a few valves ever so slightly because I didn't bleed my lifters down. That sound was one valve touching another out at the edge and mine never made that noise again either because they were bent after that.
I sincerely hope that isn't what happened for you. I would do a compression test now and that will tell you/us a little more about this situation. Crossing fingers!!!!

Thank you so much i didnt think of doing a compression test but that makes so much sense. What do you mean bleed lifters down? This was a running motor before i pulled it and it sat and i never messed around under the valve cover till i heard the sound.

It is a procedure that is done when rebuilding. You let the lifters soak in oil and then put a paperclip down in the center hole and turn it upside down, press in until you feel the check valve and that releases the oil, letting the lifter become "spongy" so it isn't pumped up and solid when you put the motor together.
You didn't do anything wrong, but that sound is super familiar to me when you said it 'Pinged". Did you roll one cam over without doing the other at the same time? That would allow contact between an exhaust valve and an intake valve, making it "Ping" and then it is just slightly bent and doesn't do it again.
Lesson.....turn both cams at the same time while they are IN TIME. I am not saying that is what happened but a compression test right now will either settle your mind or tell you something is wrong.
I am still crossing fingers and hoping the numbers come back strong......:thumb:

Thank you for your thorough reply. The engine is out of the car atm so i cant really do the compression test. And both cam gears were turning. I actually had someone experienced redo the timing with me and we couldnt get it any closer than it already was. So we completely redid the timing and couldnt get anything to happen again. he also looked at all the valvesprings and lifters as it was turning and said everything looked and felt like it should so i have hope yet.
