I'm an optomist. Looking for worst case scenario for my problem.

Driving down road. loss of power. pull over. hear oil boiling. oil level fine. hmm i think to myself. coolant overflow empty. shiat i think to myself. put water in the empty colant system. drains out of a blown hose above the oil filter that feeds the oil colling system. i think to myself new hose. go get new hose and swap it out. fill with antifreeze diluted. two gallons down... 3 and a half not thinking tomuch since its pitch black out and am spilling... 3 gallons ?*#!. look under car found an exaust leek comming from under the passanger seat... because of the antifreeze coming out.

so i would think blown headgasket.. its obvious the car overheated. so what are the chances of warped/cracked head and other problems i should look for. i know the turbo must have gotten that oil hot add the engine so whats some damages i should look out for and check caused by this happening?

The rubber from the filter on the valve cover vent got reall droopy..

go pessimists go!

thanks for the input.

If you have oil coming out of your exhaust, It could not only be a warped head or bad h/g, It could actually be something cracked (cracked head/cracked block, ETC)... The only way to really find out is to actually pull the car apart, But when you do, you will definatly find something. I would suggest first pulling the head, And go from there. Either way, The head definatly needs to come off.

Oil looks fine no milky water on the dipstick. but then again it could be in there since the oil rises to the top. but since oil level hasnt risen i would think that there is no cross over from the cooling system as it would typically level out between the two. but then again it could be a small leek and the antifreeze could be going through the cylinder faster than in the oil. im definantly taking the head off and will check for warping with a straight edge... ill look for cracks too. another thing is that the hose had a blow out * half round circle blow * not a leak from old age * a straight split or tiny hole * * but it was on an elbow * so something might have clogged the cooling passages. when i bought the car the coolant was green but maybe someone diluted it too far by putting in straight watter and it froze. i sure hope not. the freeze plugs look solid and unaffected.

If i strip her down and have to leave her apart for a bit how should i seal up the open engine outside and in the car? bags and tape? worried about moisture if the head has a fatal problem and i have to get another one whitch may take a bit.

as soon as i get the time ill strip her down. unfortunatly i just moved down here for flight school. money and funds will have to be shifted around for repairs. on a positive note the family i moved in with has a nice tool selection. anything else i should be looking for would be nice. and any tips on working on these engines. im used to working on sbc and any fuel injected cars ive worked on never had engine problems it was always ball/cv joints clutches and other non engine related stuff..

I am doing research and do have a chiltons manual. but in my opinion any first hand knowledge from an actual person is a nice buffer since if i asked the book questions it may get acward. :hmm:

When you remove the head, You can remove the head/intake mani/fuel rail/injectors/exhaust mani all together as one unit, But it will be HEAVY, So either have a puller, Or a friend to help lift it so you don't get hurt (esp bending over to lift it up. That is going to cut your removal time in half.

Just remove the upper rad hose, The the crank pulley/timing belt covers (alt and p/s belts too), And you're basically almost done.

Remove the valve cover, And remove the headbolts.

After that, You're about 5-10minutes away from being able to lift the head off, Other then the small misc vac hoses/lines you'll need to d/c first( fuel lines to the rail, And there may be a bracket that bolts from your under-side of your intake mani, to your block). If someone didn't alreayd remove it, Just remove the one 12mm or 14mm bolt from the block side of it, And you can easily leave the other two bolts connected to the intake mani.

I think you are going to find your damage as soon as you remove the head.

sweet that should cut things down. so ill get everything set up remove the hood then pull her up. what should i do to cover the engine and turbo? bag them?

Hmm anyone have advice on how to get melted spark plug wire plastic out of the spark plug tubes? busted/pulled the wires out trying to get em out...
