Penzoil Synchromesh?

hey is syncromesh the only good tranny oil? like what about redline and those other ones? DO you think the problem with a lot of your tranny's could have just been the bad used oil? or do you think that the syncromesh really did it...

I have a little bit of trouble shifting occaisionally just in 2nd and I was going to switch tranny fluids... I didnt read about syncro mesh until just now and I am sitting here with three bottles of redline high performance synthetic tranny fluid sitting in front of me... Should I stick with the redline or return it and go for the penzoil? Do you think it would make a big difference between the two?

thats what I asked when I started the thread! .... but Im putting in redline 75-90 synthetic high performance either today or tuesday and I will make sure to tell you all how it turns out...

I cannot comment on the Redline. I was originally going to use it but it was not readily available in my area. Advanced notified me at that time they were going to start stocking it, but I have never checked back with them. I went to Autozone and got the Synchromesh. Anyway, since the Pennzoil stuff works OK for me, I see no need to change at this time.

About two years ago I tried the Red Line MT in my 92 TSi Awd. I cannot remember if it was the MTL or MT90. None the less, it did not help the double clutch to get into 1st and reverse and the 1-2 grind.

A week later, I changed it out and put BG Syncro Shift II. Immediatedly off the lift it was a totaly different animal. The above problems were gone.

Recently I put the Pennzoil Syncromesh in the 97GST and I noticed it was alit better.

John Shepherd also recommend I use the Pennzoil Syncromesh in the transmission he recently rebuilt for the 92 TSI.

Wow you brought back an old thread

Anyway, I can't remember what the specs were on the synchromesh, but lots of tuners including me have been running it for a long time with no problems.

Did you read the links in Post #25? Apparently not.
No, it's thinner than 90 weight. Yes, it works just fine.

Its "special" not labeled like the 75W-90 etc....

Probably more like a 55W-75...

I just wanted to comment on NOT using a non syncomesh fluid in our tranys. The HW gear oils do not have the needed friction modifires that are needed for the syncros to engauge. I have also heard that the BM 2 syncoshift fliud is harder on the bearings than the pensoil stuff. Also change the fluid every 12k and will see the trany live longer. I think changing the fluid and keeping your clutch adjusted properly is the 2 things that keep these tranys alive.

I just want to add my testament to the Pennzoil Synchromesh. It's definitely and improvement! I used to have trouble shifting into 1st gear at a stop and it would take me several tries to get it in gear and disengaging and engaging the clutch to help the matter. Well not anymore! It goes into 1st gear every time on the first attempt. No more watching the traffic lights and rushing to get it in gear and wondering how many attempts before it slides in.

What it didn't do was cure the notchy 1-2 shift. Although it doesn't grind now but did in the winter, the notchiness isn't as harsh as before. I guess I'll have to wait till it gets cold and see if it still grinds gears on the 1-2 shift.

I have driven a friends early 1g with the single synchros after I put in penz-synch...

It felt like my 2g dual synchro when I bought it..

The stuff makes a 2g dual synchro like shift like butter...
